Be sure not to miss Cascades Academy student Adrienne Turner’s first big art show at the First Friday Art Walk in downtown Bend on February 5th. Adrienne will be showing her photographs at Hot Box Betty, the popular clothier at the intersections of Wall and Minnesota. Adreinne under the guidance of mentor and local photographer Carol Sternkopf, and as part of our elective program, honed her photography skills over the course of the first term and developed a series of photographs that she will have the opportunity to show on February 5th.
Below you will can read Adrienne's artist's statement:
It wasn't until around three years ago that I picked up a camera and knew I wanted to do more than take photographs for the sake of taking them. Even if they were only meaningful to me, at least they meant something.
My name is Adrienne Turner, and I am a 16 year-old student currently attending high school at Cascades Academy of Central Oregon, as a junior. This year my school offered the opportunity for an internship of our choice, and it was then that I decided to take the next step in my photography. Not longer after, I was set up with Carol Sternkopf, a very kind, talented, and inspiring photographer. From the very start Carol and I got along famously, and I knew that she would help me strengthen my relationship to my art.
While in my internship, I was able to learn a little bit about different photographers, including Keith Carter and William Wegman, and use some of their photos for inspiration of style. Believe it or not, there are many things to learn from another's photography. Not just about them as an artist, but about them as a person, and I find that to be a very interesting element. That fact alone, to me, is inspiring. When you look at my photos I want you to be able to get a feel for who I am, even if you're way off base.
As for future endeavors, I plan to study photography more in college and hopefully open my own business. Even though the possibility of photography not becoming a career is present, I am sure that it will always be my favorite past time without second thought.
