‘Fabrications’ – The Art of Quilting
Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show (SOQS) is partnering with Arts Central to host the first juried art quilt exhibit to be held in Bend, Oregon. Fabrications – The Art of Quilting opens at Arts Central on Friday February 3, 2012. Opening night coincides with the monthly First Friday Art Walk in Bend. Join us that evening from 5pm to 8pm to meet the artists, explore their creative processes and preview the 2012 Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show poster and raffle quilt. The exhibit will include more than 30 quilts and showcase artists from around Central Oregon throughout the month of February.

Art in the Atrium at Franklin Crossing, 550 NW Franklin, celebrates First Friday, February 3, 2012, from 5 – 8 pm with digital art by Dorothy Freudenberg and gallery artists. The exhibition continues through February 27, 2012.
Dorothy Freudenberg, cover artist of this month’s A&E, presents color-saturated, digital media images. Continuing to expand her skills and imagery, she creates the artwork by deconstructing and recombining digital photos, layering the constructions into collages. The work reveals both Western and Eastern influences wherein the artist juxtaposes still, empty space with profuse imagery and intense color. The confines of her initial, traditional photography pursuits disappear in the limitless possibilities of the complex digital media.
Appearing with Freudenberg are other artists frequently featured in exhibitions organized by Billye Turner, art consultant. In the February show are oils by Sandy Brooke, Joanne Donaca and D L Watson, acrylics by Gary Vincent, and bronze sculpture by Steve Tyree.
Typhoon! serves wine and Thai appetizers and the popular Tommy Leroy Trio performs jazz with Andy Armor, piano, George Bouhey, drums, and Tom Freedman, bass. Turner provides additional information at 541.382.9398.

The colors, the gestures, the feelings in this series of paintings remind Bandy of jazz and of other vibrant times, of cocktails from another era.
For inspiration Bandy often listens to jazz while she’s painting, or working in her other medium; her jewelry designs, or while just relaxing.
The tunes she listens to are mostly upbeat and Bandy hopes that is evident in her latest paintings. “Through colorful layers of energy, shape, notes, and city-like scenes, I am trying to convey the energy, the vibe of jazz and cocktails”, says Bandy.

cream, Belgian chocolate and all natural flavorings imported from Europe. All the fruit and pastry cream fillings,
frostings, and savory fillings are made fresh by scratch as well. When you pour your heart and soul into
your work, your not going to get up before the crack of dawn to bake with a stick of margarine. If your going
to treat yourself you may as well do it with the best.
It’s owned and operated by Di Long who has been baking desserts for several local restaurants over the past
couple years. With great success and raving reviews she was encouraged to open a downtown storefront for
her bakery here in Bend. Di Long was taught by the world renowned Marda Stoliar, owner of The International
School of Baking. Marda Stoliar also owned and operated the Breads of France here in Bend back in
the 1980’s, and has been a consultant in the opening of over 100 bakeries worldwide, as well as the consultant
for La Magie Bakery. It didn’t take long after Di began her training a couple years ago with Marda, that she discovered
her passion was not just in baking amazing desserts, breads and pastries, but to turn them into a true
work of art.

Throughout February, Thump Coffee in downtown Bend exhibits a collection of Great Basin photos shot by Bend-based professional photographer Zack Jones, whose clients include bicycle companies Trek and
Burley, as well as several magazines. Thump will not be open late for First Friday Art Walk this month.
“From sitting in my garden with a refreshing beverage to guiding bike tours around the world, I have kept a visual record of the places, people, creatures, and adventures I have experienced in photographs,” says Jones. “The prints shown at Thump Coffee are a selection of images from the Great Basin, a place of both quirky and sublime beauty.”
Jones explains that he is not a “purist,” instead embracing the tools of modern technology to make and share images as he sees them in his mind. “I see these tools as brushes and paint to a painter and find the true art in knowing how and when to use them,” he explains.

Artist Kevin Schwarting grew up in the suburbs of Chicago and spent ten years in Montana before moving to Bend in the spring of 2010. He began drawing and sketching as a child, initially fascinated by charcoal until colors took him into another realm. Downtown Bend Flower Contract
Announced: Wednesday, January 11, 2012
The Downtown Bend Business Association (DBBA), a nonprofit business association is seeking proposals from qualified contractors to provide flower baskets.
The successful candidate will grow and maintain multi-colored petunias in 96 eighteen inch baskets. Baskets will be provided by the DBBA. The baskets will be picked up and installed by a 3^rd party. The baskets must be in bloom, appropriately developed and ready for pick-up by May 25^th, so growing must start in a heated greenhouse in February.
Proposals shall be on 8 ½ x 11 paper and should not exceed four pages including references and shall include a cost per basket.

DOWNTOWN BEND STOREFRONT CHANGES
Occupancy at 92% with several new and relocating businesses
The Downtown Bend Business Association is pleased to announce three new businesses starting up and many more relocating within downtown and the current occupancy rate. Occupancy is at 92%, a slight dip from the end of the third quarter. The rate is based upon the number of leased retail/restaurant spaces in the downtown district.
“For the 2^nd year in a row, we have seen a small dip in our occupancy in the fourth quarter. Sales in the fourth quarter were up year over year so we move into the first quarter with solid optimism“, says DBBA Executive Director Chuck Arnold.
Bond Street gets more brews as Deschutes Brewery finishes up their expansion at 1030 Bond with plans to open next month. The corner of Greenwood and Bond will soon have The Ale House by Brother Jon’s at 1051 Bond. The popular Galveston pub is expanding into downtown with food, brews and entertainment and anticipates opening in February.
Brooks Street is ramping up for the opening of Bend Bungalow Warehouse at 930 Brooks. The outlet for the popular Wall Street shop will offer great deals on great Bend Bungalow merchandise and will be open only for special sale events.
Oregon Avenue sees Sunlight Solar move into 61 Oregon offering information and consultations for residential and commercial solar installations.
Wall Street gains Lotus Moon (within Tres Jolie at 933 Wall) offering an interesting array of sustainable gifts, clothes and jewelry. The shop was formerly located on Brooks Street. Game Domain, the game and card shop moves from Oregon to downstairs in the 1000 Wall building. The Savy Agency, an integrated marketing agency servicing consumer-facing and business-to-business brands expands upstairs at 916 Wall. Topolino also expands next door at 842 Wall. The children’s clothing store staple in downtown has grown into a full service toy and clothing shop for young ones. Also at 842 Wall, What Lola Wants now occupies Topolino’s former space. The gift shop offers unique brands not typically found in Bend.
The DBBA is a private nonprofit organization representing approximately 375 businesses and 85 property owners working to keep Downtown Bend vibrant. The organization is responsible for downtown beautification, cleaning and maintenance, marketing, events and keeping the business environment healthy. Downtown Bend Economic Improvement District 2012 Q & A
What is an Economic Improvement District (EID)?
An EID is a funding mechanism that enables Downtown Bend to achieve its goal of staying successful. EID’s are utilized throughout the U.S. in cities of all sizes as an equitable way to fund improvements. With an EID, ALL property owners (and thus tenant business owners) contribute to the effort via an assessment of square footage. The EID may invest in improvements of beautification, maintenance, marketing and other projects or programs which ultimately increase property value and economic activity.
Don’t we already have one of these?
Downtown has benefitted from an EID since 2007. The current district will terminate as planned in April 2012. The EID has been responsible for such popular improvements as the flower baskets, banners, holiday decorations, sidewalk cleaning, snow removal as well as events and marketing.
Why do we need an EID?
If the EID is not reauthorized for 2012, many downtown projects will end. Funding will be lost for flower baskets, holiday lights and decorations, sidewalk cleaning, snow removal, banners and more. Downtown will lose its liaison and advocate, its marketing and maintenance teams as staff will be laid off. Events like Art Hop, Oktoberfest, the Sidewalk Sale, the Holiday tree lighting, visits with Santa and more will lose funding leading to their potential cancellation.
What changes with this proposed EID?
The 2012 EID will launch an aggressive annual marketing program to bring more locals downtown! This program will be more far reaching than any previous effort ever undertaken. We will hire a professional brand and marketing company to develop and execute a new campaign for downtown that will be present in our local media year around. We will keep downtown and downtown businesses top of mind!
In order to fund this effort, we are proposing an adjustment to the scope and scale of the district. The rate per square foot will increase 3 cents. The annual assessment will be $0.18 per square foot of commercial building space for a three year period. For the average 1,200 sq. ft retail shop this means we will have a fantastic marketing program that will benefit all businesses for only $3 more per month.
How were the EID assessments determined?
The nonprofit Downtown Bend Business Association Board of Directors and staff have been meeting with property and business owners to determine the scope of work, budget, project area and duration of District. We have been doing a lot of research to address what we need to do to continue to keep Downtown Bend vibrant.
What are the next steps?
There will be public hearings that will allow property owner comment. Property owners will receive an official letter from the City of Bend announcing the first public hearing scheduled March 7th. City Council, after hearing from property and business owners, will then determine the course of the EID. The final hearing to consider approval will occur May 2nd.
Who supports this?
This is the 3rd EID proposed for Downtown Bend and support has increased every year. Over 60 businesses and property owners have signed endorsements supporting the district (with more added every day)-twice as many as the previous EID proposed in 2009 during the height of the recession.

Snow Removal

Each and every storm that leaves an accumulation of snow requires removal. Our goal is make an accessible path throughout downtown keeping it accessible and welcoming. The Downtown Association assists business owners with snow removal and sidewalk cleaning. We also shovel snow and clean curb ramps at crosswalks and the accessible parking stalls.
Our staff clears a path along the approximate 2.5 miles of sidewalk, but due to limited resources, we cannot shovel the entire sidewalk. Remember, city code requires each business owner to keep their adjacent sidewalk safe and clean.

Five Fusion & Sushi Bar in downtown Bend wrapped up the first year of their Collaborative Charity Dinner Series, raising a total of over $30,000 for KIDS Center, Saving Grace, Deschutes River Conservancy, Serendipity West Foundation, Tower Theatre, Sparrow Clubs, Abilitree, BendFilm, Ronald McDonald House, Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Central Oregon, Volunteers in Medicine, Healing Reins, Family Resource Center and Central Oregon LandWatch.
New in 2011, the 5 Fusion Collaborative Charity Dinner Series features a different guest chef from the Bend area each month, who takes center stage at 5 Fusion, creating a beautifully prepared and presented multi-course dinner, perfectly matched with wines and spirits from top producers. All net proceeds are donated to essential local non-profits working to create a healthier, safer, more vibrant community in Central Oregon.
Instrumental in making this series a success are the many local chefs and restaurants who have partnered with 5 Fusion, including Skye Elder of the Pine Tavern, Joe Benevento of Tart Bistro, Dave Flier of Rockin’ Daves, OJ Robinson of Seasons at Seventh Mountain Resort, Steven Draheim of Soupcon, Lisa Glickman, Di Long, Jonathan Hardy of the Blacksmith Restaurant, David Touvell of CHOW, Juri Sbandati of Trattoria Sbandati and Matt Neltner of Deschutes Brewery. Each of these talented chefs worked closely with 5 Fusion, contributing greatly to the success of the series.
The series is part of an ongoing effort by restaurant owner Lilian Chu to increase community support and awareness of local non-profit organizations. “A key reason we even exist is to give back to our community. It’s a huge part of our mission,” relates owner Lilian Chu. “We began our monthly Collaborative Charity Dinner Series as a way to support the non-profits who make Central Oregon the best place to live and thrive.”
“The success of the series is our collaboration with other chefs. We get a chance to partner with and learn from our talented fellow restaurateurs, and diners have the opportunity to see these chefs in a different setting. Everyone works together, learning from each other, and the charities benefit!”
The 2012 series kicks off with a special Chinese New Year Celebration on January 23^rd, featuring a traditional, eight-course Chinese dinner. The number eight is widely regarded in Chinese culture as a universally lucky number. The meal will include pairings of specialty cocktails and wines, designed to complement the cuisine. 2 Grants Available: OJT National Emergency Grant & Back to Work OJT Grant
Central Oregon Intergovernmental Council (COIC) has received funding to assist employers in training new hires that have been affected by the economic recession.
To summarize, this program is to assist employers in training and retaining employees. The funding will pay up to 50% of the trainee’s wages for a training period of up to 3+ months. The employer can choose the trainee (we would need to pre-screen for eligibility) or we could provide a list of eligible trainees.
COIC has designated myself and Leslie Mitts to facilitate this grant therefore we would be assisting the employer with all the paperwork and ensuring the process is as simple as possible.

Every child will experience the
Joy of Christmas
Every year since 1984, the Rotary Clubs of Bend, Oregon (USA) have come together to insure that every child will experience the joy of Christmas by receiving gifts donated by the citizens of Bend.
This year the Tree of Joy continues once again but with a new overseer . . . the Bend branch of The Salvation Army. For many years, The Salvation Army has been responsible for screening and qualifying those who are eligible for participation in the Tree of Joy. This year, we are streamlining the entire Tree of Joy operation by availing ourselves of The Salvation Army’s fulltime staff and organization.
We will still serve approximately 900 individuals, but we’ll use the Salvation Army’s sorting center, their pre-printed “tags” and their package pick-up operation. It will be easier for recipients, easier for The Salvation Army and will insure that everyone who is eligible to participate in the program will receive their gifts and a food basket in a timely manner.
New “partners” this year included On-Point Credit Union. Individuals can visit the downtown Bend offices of above three credit unions and choose tags from the three additional Trees of Joy for recipients.

From their studio in Tumalo, Randal and Holly Smithey create abstract works in steel, bronze, and copper. Bend, Oregon sells handmade ornaments to help sister city in Condega, Nicaragua
On the surface, you might not see much common ground between Condega, Nicaragua and Bend, Oregon. Bend is a thriving tourist mecca in one of the wealthiest nations in the world, while Condega is a small village in the second poorest country in the western hemisphere.
But these two sister cities have a desire to help each other when a chance appears – and a chance has just appeared in the form of small, wooden holiday ornaments.
“Craftsmen in Condega have been hard at work creating handmade, wooden ornaments for the people of Bend,” explained Rick Negus, one of the volunteers organizing the Condega fundraiser. “We’re very excited to make them available here as a way of raising money to help schoolchildren in our sister city.”
The ornaments went on sale this week at locations throughout the city, including Saxon’s Fine Jewelers in the Old Mill District and the Bend Visitor Center. Ornaments will also be sold at the downtown Bend Christmas tree lighting on November 25.
The wooden ornaments are available for a $10 tax-free donation. Each ornament is boxed for easy gift-giving, and includes a decorative tag that explains the sister city relationship and how funds will help purchase textbooks and academic supplies for the children of Condega.
“Bend is known for its generous spirit, and I’ve been impressed with the enthusiasm people are already showing for supporting this worthy cause,” explained Kathie Eckman, another project volunteer. “Not only are people helping less fortunate citizens, but they’re getting a lovely, handmade ornament with a great story attached.”

It’s been over 5 months since the beautiful flower baskets were installed downtown. Fall kisses the flowers good night for the year. We owe a great deal of thanks to Downtown Bend businesses and property owners who fund the flower basket program. Over 100 baskets were installed and cared for this year by our contractor (and downtown business!) Botanical Developments. This program is maintained with ZERO public funding.
We also would like to thank Sagebrush and Wanderlust Tours who co-sponsored our flower basket program this year. Businesses can sponsor a basket for a year with a small donation to the Downtown Bend Business Association. Contact the office at: (541) 788-3628 to find out more.
Now what?
Watch for special surprise “winter art” installation in January, but in the meantime it’s time to decorate downtown for the holidays.
Volunteers are needed on Sunday, November 13th @ 10am to help hang Christmas lights and wreaths throughout downtown. Again, this is a community effort with dozens of volunteers contributing. No public funding is involved. Give us a call to get involved!

Downtown Bend Business Association-2011 Events Survey
As downtown businesses, we have the largest stake in the success of downtown. Events are a part of downtown and it is crucial that we work to make certain that they are good for business.
We are seeking input on how we can change the City of Bend Special Events Code to ensure that the interaction between events and business improves. The policy ideas below have come from downtown businesses, property owners, event producers and the community. We have held several meetings and gone door-to-door to get input from everyone.
The feedback we gather will be brought to City officials as changes to the City code governing events requested by downtown stakeholders.

High Desert Gallery is pleased to participate in the upcoming Day of the Dead Art Celebration and hope to see you this weekend! In it’s third iteration the Cross Culture: Bike + Art Love puts a new spin on the event to kick off the Day of the Dead Cyclocross Festival on Friday, October 28th in Downtown Bend, Oregon.
Work by Central Oregon Artist, Lloyd McMullen will be featured in addition to tasting with Oregon Spirit Distillers. A Hoot For Sure!
Cross Culture matches artists and local businesses for a special event exploring Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead), the cultural celebration of the lives and memories of the deceased. “We’re thrilled to expand on the Cross Culture concept to give a nod to the traditions of Latin culture with interpretive altars and Day of the Dead inspired artworks” said event founder Cassondra Schindler.
The Cross Culture Caminata offers a unique interpretation of the Dia de los Muertos tradition of parading through the streets with shrines and altars. Rather than watching the art move past, participants are invited to walk from one art installation to the next while meeting a talented line-up of local artists hosted by downtown Bend businesses.
About Lloyd McMullen: Lloyd’s curious nature is reflected in eclectic two- and three-dimensional mixed media art. A journalism degree and lifelong love of reading and writing creep into paintings and sculptures. Acrylic paintings are layered with deep transparent glazes to embed objects and color within the work. “My work is about time, seeking glimpses of history revealed in simple objects.
McMullen is a Print Associate at Atelier 6000, a fine art prints studio and artists’ workshop in Bend, Oregon; one of the founding members of Artists Local 101, a Central Oregon-based contemporary art group; Visual Arts Program Director at Young Musicians & Artists, Willamette University-based program; and, until recently an advisory board member of Cascades a&e and member of the 135 UP! gallery in Bend.
McMullen’s work has been exhibited most recently in invitational/juried exhibits at the Coos Art Museum, Coos Bay, OR; the Burien Gallery, Seattle, WA; Atelier 6000 and Central Oregon Community College in Bend, OR; Brooklyn Art Library/Art Coop, Brooklyn, NY; the Art House Gallery, Atlanta, GA.; Maude Kerns Art Center, Eugene, OR; the Firehouse Gallery, Del Rio Council for the Arts, TX; and includes outdoor installations in Central Oregon.

The City has announced that they will be holding an open house to get feedback on the Special Events Code. Their announcement is below:
As a result of feedback from the community, City of Bend
staff began reviewing the Special Events Code as well as the
internal process for scheduling and managing these events.
A proposal was presented to the City Council on December 7,
2011 and with their support staff is initiating an open house
for interested parties to discuss these proposed changes.
Open House Date: Wednesday, January 25th, 2012

Thank you to everyone who participated in our events survey. A summary is below. We have received great support from downtown businesses and the city on making changes to how events interact with downtown. Some changes will occur in the code and others will result in city staff policy. We are pleased with the process and our optimistic that the coming season will go smooth.
December 2011-Downtown Bend Events Survey Summary
We surveyed several dozen downtown businesses, some formally with a written survey and others through ongoing conversations.
The survey questions were:
SCALE OF CLOSURES
Wall & Bond Streets cannot be closed simultaneously on a weekday unless approved by City Council in a public forum where downtown can weigh in.
MORATORIUM
A moratorium on any new street closures from May to October unless voted on by City Council.
MEET W/ DOWNTOWN BEFORE PERMIT ISSUED
Require event producers to meet with the Downtown Bend Business Association 60 days prior to event. Event producers must complete the Downtown Bend Event Checklist prior to receiving their City permit.
IS A CLOSURE NEEDED?
Require City staff to ask event producers if a street closure is needed for their event and encourage the event to be held adjacent to downtown such as Troy Field, in an alley or Drake Park.
The feedback can be generally summarized:
- 90% of respondents wanted a requirement for event producers to meet with the DBBA prior to the permit being issued.
- 80% wanted limitations on Wall & Bond being closed simultaneously on weekdays.
- 65% would like to see a moratorium on any new street closures from May to October unless voted on by City Council.
- 60% of respondents would like City staff ask event producers to first consider adjacent spaces to downtown prior to considering closing a street.
- Other mentioned items included: Avoiding permitted closures on consecutive weekends and putting more controls on whether or not a single business can close a street for their benefit (ie-stricter measurement of the existing code of “public benefit” of the street closure)

Dear Downtown Stakeholder,
The staff and Board of the Downtown Bend Business Association would like to thank everyone who attended and participated in the events discussion on Monday. Your thoughts and ideas were greatly appreciated and helped direct the path we would like to take for future events. It was great to have so many people wanting to be involved in Downtown Bend!
At the meeting, staff read through the current City code for events. It is the City code that determines how events are held downtown. The feedback we heard was that the code needs more specific to address how events interact with Downtown Bend.
Some of the main topics discussed and questions asked included:
-          How is “minimal impact” determined in regards to an event taking place downtown?
-          Is there a limit on the number of days an event can close the streets? Also, can we discourage back to back events/street closures and closures of both Wall and Bond simultaneously?
-          Is there a requirement for events coordinators to work with the DBBA? (Events checklist should be required)
-          What are the consequences if the events company does not follow the guidelines?
-          Can we change the time frame to a 60 day notice?
-          Can we have more events in Troy Field/ School District Parking Lot?
-          We need to address the issue of conflicting events happening around town on the same weekends.
-          Branding- need to work together to brand downtown, have control of our brand
In general property owners and business owners stated that they would like to be more involved in the process for events. That process will be moving quickly. It is our goal to have new events policies enacted by the City before the spring when events are more frequent.
This is an open process. We want more people involved and if you couldn’t make the meeting, your voice will still be heard. Our next steps will be to gather more feedback on code changes via a web survey and a door-to-door poll of downtown owners. Please give your feedback to a board member or your peers so that we can request the best policy changes that will work to keep Downtown Bend businesses vital.

El Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) Cultural Celebration

Join in the 2000 year old celebration of life and those who have made an impact in who we are today. El Dia de los Muertos, a Mexican custom of remembrance, will be replicated Friday, October 28th at the PoetHouse in downtown Bend from 5:00 pm to 11:00 pm. The celebration is a fundraiser for La Causa Oregon and the PoetHouse.
The celebration will begin with a traditional procession of music and dance, followed by customary Aztec rituals, music, cultural foods and drink, and crafts. Among the highlights of this year’s festival is the large calavera, (skull) built and preliminarily outlined over these past few weeks, providing a unique canvas for the community to paint on, write a message on or adorn with a memento to honor and celebrate those significant in their lives. A community altar, sugar skulls and other interactive art, erected in honor of passed loved ones, will also be on display.
At first glance, el Dia de los Muertos appears to be a mirror of how the United States celebrates halloween. Both festivals relate to death. However the customs have different origins and meanings. In the American version of Halloween, death is feared. In the traditional el Dia de los Muertos celebration, the memories of those who have passed away are to be celebrated. Many times the deceased is honored through construction of an altar where photos, candles, sugar skulls, brightly colored paper and marigolds are placed that reflect the pleasures of a loved one’s life. It is believed that on this day the souls of the dead return home to reunite with their families.

Cost: Suggested donation of $5.00 – $10.00 at the door, supporting La Causa and the PoetHouse.
Community Partners: The creation of the large calvera, the smaller ones, and the altars is being done in workshop form at the PoetHouse in conjunction with many community partners, including cada|casa, the PoetHouse, the Latino Community Association, Human Dignity Coalition, Central Oregon Peace Network, Bend Youth Collective, Boys and Girls Clubs.
Special Items of Interest: It is hoped this celebration will open a dialogue about the Latino culture and begin changing the way people view diverse customs, traditions, or even death. Through art and self-expression, La Causa and the PoetHouse wish to build relationships that will support engagement of the full community.

The Downtown Bend Business Association is pleased to announce five new businesses starting up, four relocating within or into downtown and the current occupancy rate. Occupancy climbed to 94%, a jump from the end of the third quarter. The rate is based upon the number of leased retail/restaurant spaces in the downtown district.
“Nine storefront changes this quarter is a bit of a slowdown and indicates that the downtown commercial leasing market may be stabilizing,” says DBBA Executive Director Chuck Arnold.
Bond Street gains The Lobby at 949 Bond. The new store offers snacks, drinks and a comfortable work environment in their WiFi café area. Upstairs from The Lobby, also at 949 Bond, will be Andre’s Dance Club, an all ages dance club.
Lotus Moon has opened at 930 Brooks Street offering an interesting array of sustainable gifts, clothes and jewelry.
Franklin Avenue now hosts Colour N’ The City, 550 Franklin, in Tin Pan Alley across from the Connecting Point Computers parking lot. Colour N’ The City is a furniture and décor shop with beautiful shabby chic items.
In an exciting development, three new businesses have located this quarter in the 750 Lava Road building known as Putnam Pointe. The Bend Visitors Center at the corner of Oregon and Lava hosts a fantastic one stop center to welcome our out of town guests. Just south of that location will be a local favorite-the fine dining of Jackalope Grill as they plan to relocate to that space this fall. Finally, the building gains the very chic Kariella Clothes Shop, a boutique offering some lines available nowhere else in Central Oregon.
Ruby has rented the space at 147 Minnesota Avenue and will open soon as a chic lounge and bar.
Wall Street now offers Gypsy Soul at 815 Wall, which grew out of trunk shows from around the NW. Gypsy Soul is a boutique that combines women’s fashion and gypsy home furnishings
The DBBA is a private nonprofit organization representing approximately 375 businesses and 85 property owners working to keep Downtown Bend vibrant. The organization is responsible for downtown beautification, cleaning and maintenance, marketing, events and keeping the business environment healthy. High Desert Gallery is excited to announce Pacific Northwest guest artist, painter Simona Foggitt, October 14 to December 14, 2011. “Alchemy”, exhibition is featured at High Desert Gallery, 10 NW Minnesota Avenue at The Oxford Hotel in downtown Bend, Oregon.
Simona Foggitt’s architectural inspiration is constantly at work within her when she paints. The result is an overwhelming urge to construct, plan and juxtapose various elements and forms together to create a “space” that instead of clashing, is at peace with all the foreign elements paint and metal that she has created together.
The early phases of a painting are very thought intensive. Much detailed planning is involved, based on an initial vision of elements and the manner in which they will work together harmoniously in the final stages of the piece. In other words, which metal form will best harmonize the painting. The painting is impossible to paint without these forms already in place as the one cannot live without the other.
In this series of paintings I was particularly interested in creating very soft yet saturated fields of color in contrast to the bold metal elements. I put in much effort to achieve a particular richness and depth in the application of the multitude of transparent tinted glazes, which comprise the field of the piece. For me,painting in the abstract, is simply the expression of another, perhaps less familiar language. These intangible thoughts and inspirations are all about color, form and harmony that exist within our everyday lives and surroundings.

The Pine Tavern, which turns 75 years old this year, is supporting the Des Chutes Historical Museum during a weekend of anniversary events scheduled for September 23-25.
On Saturday, September 24, the Des Chutes Historical Museum partners with the Pine Tavern for a special 75th Anniversary Dinner and Raffle. With a special anniversary menu, displays and a raffle drawing, a portion of the evening’s proceeds benefit the exhibits, collections and programs held at the Des Chutes Historical Museum throughout the year. Cost is $35.00 per person (beverage and gratuity not included), reservations recommended, walk-ins welcome. Call [541-382-5581] for reservations.
One hundred percent of the anniversary raffle proceeds benefit the Des Chutes Historical Museum, and prizes include golf packages, wine packages, certificates from Oxford Hotel and the Lara House Bed and Breakfast, a Red Diamond bicycle, jewelry from Pave Jewelers and Trivia Antiques, gift certificates for downtown stores, and more. Need not be present to win and raffle tickets can be purchased in advance at the Des Chutes Historical Museum and the Pine Tavern. Raffle tickets are $2.00 each or 12 for $20.00. Drawing will be held the evening of Saturday, September 24th.
In addition, the Pine Tavern is offering a Seventy-five Cent Burger lunch on Friday, September 23 from 11:30 to 2:30. Then on Sunday, September 25, guests to the restaurant pay only 75% of their bill.

Do the little things to make customers spread the good word about your store.
WHY? Word-of-mouth advertising is important. And it’s all the rage in every business-advice book, but apart from typically inane tips like “do it through a relentless focus on excellence,” few have suggested how to genuinely generate it.
HOW? Make It Stick’s authors Chip and Dan Heath come closer with their “105 percent rule.” The five percent refers to the little things that make you stand out from the crowd and which should be part of any product or service design process. They cite examples like Voodoo Doughnuts in Portland, OR, whose voodoo-doll shaped doughnuts bleed jelly when stuck with a pretzel pin, and Innocent Drinks, a British smoothie maker that hires grannies to knit little woolly hats for its winter drinks (so the bottles don’t catch a cold). The Bank of the Cascades Bend Fall Festival, presented by The Source Weekly will bring a celebration of all things fall to downtown Bend Oct. 1 and Oct. 2. Fall-themed activities-yodeling anyone?-music, art, and food will thrill attendees of all ages.
Two music stages, the Clear 101.7 fm Mainstage on Oregon Avenue and KPOV Local’s Only Stage in the Wells Fargo parking lot, will provide a mix of local and regional talent such as Supersuckers, Hill Stomp, Leif James and Moon Mountain Ramblers.

Often times the biggest challenge to health and fitness is simply the motivation. You have the information, you have the education, you have the resources, but doggone it, you just don’t want to do it! Well we have created a fun competition where you can kick your fellow competitors butt while shrinking your own!
You probably know about the various contest we have held in the past at inMotion. This contest is our first Team Competition which combines all of the different aspects of health and fitness into a fun game based on the Game On diet. We still have some room as we are only taking 20 teams for the challenge that starts September 20th. The best part is that Bootcamp classes and Personal training are deeply discounted when you join the challenge for only $39 per individual team member.
The only catch is that the challenge is filling up and we can only take on 15 more teams. So if you’re ready to fit into your skinny jeans again and want to firm and tone your body all while dropping inches and pounds then make sure to register for our Healthy Loser Team Challenge.

Young poets take note! SpeakNOW, The Nature of Words’ first annual spoken word competition, will take place Wednesday, October 5^th at 7:00 p.m. at PoetHouse Art, 55 NW Minnesota Ave. in Bend. The competition, which is free to enter, is open to ages 14 to 18. One winner will be chosen to receive a $100 cash prize, a scholarship to a guest author workshop during The Nature of Words literary festival in November, and an opportunity to read the winning poems during the Rising Star Creative Writing Competition Awards Ceremony on November 2, 2011. The awards ceremony is the opening event of the literary festival.
Twelve contestants will be chosen to read at the competition, based on a first-come basis during signup at 6:30 p.m. on October 5^that PoetHouse Art. Contestants should come prepared with two original poems and will be allowed up to four minutes to perform each poem. Six final contestants will be chosen from the first round of performances. The finalists will perform their second poem, and a winner will be chosen from that group. Judging will be based on content, delivery and audience response. Full contest details are available at www.thenatureofwords.org.
Audience participation is welcome and general admission to the event is $3.00.

We are thrilled to welcome back the CATGUT TRIO for Opening Night this season. This will be their third appearance in the HDCM Series, and as usual, will introduce the audience to new and exciting works, many of which are not widely known. They will be joined by special guest pianist Robert Thies, who was recently in Central Oregon performing with the Central Oregon Symphony. Robert is a Gold Medal Winner of the International Prokofiev Competition in Russia, and the Los Angeles Times describes him as “a pianist of unerring warm-toned refinement, revealing judicious glimmers of power.” More information about Robert can be found on his website.

Ok collectors are wine afficionados out there. Another block buster from the ‘Master of Blending’ Joseph Phelps, the 2008 is a must for any cellar or just to get it off your ‘Bucket List’!
“The blend of the 2008 Insignia, 89% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Petit Verdot and 4% Merlot, is not terribly different from the 2007. However, I suspect the production will be a lot less given the frost damage in early spring. The color is an inky/purple and the wine shows lots of cassis, blueberry, graphite and floral notes, good acidity, stunning concentration and purity, and a long finish. Another great success for Phelps, the 2007 and 2008 Insignias may be the best back-to-back vintages they have produced since 1995 and 1994. The 2008 has some tannins to resolve whereas the 2007 has already assimilated them. It appears the 2008 will require 2-3 years of bottle age, but should last for three decades.”
“Joseph Phelps’ flagship wine, which they have been making for 36 years, is the Insignia, which boasts a remarkable track record. Phelps, always a visionary, was the first to recognize that a blend of grapes could be better than a single varietal cuvee. Phelps produces a 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from the Backus Vineyard situated on the eastern slopes of the Oakville Corridor overlooking Screaming Eagle and Rudd Estate.”

High Desert Gallery is excited to announce Pacific Northwest guest artists, Jeremy Newman and Allison Ciancibelli, August 19 to October 12, 2011. “Rhythms of Nature” exhibition is featured at High Desert Gallery, located at 10 NW Minnesota Avenue at The Oxford Hotel in downtown Bend, Oregon.
Jeremy Newman and Allison Ciancibelli are a husband and wife, they collaboratively design and create blown glass sculpture. Jeremy has been blowing glass since 1997, learning the skills of the craft through a traditional apprenticeship with Garth Mudge. Allison has been working with glass since opening the studio in 2001.

In order to create each one of a kind piece, Jeremy and Allison incorporate traditional glassblowing skills together with woodworking and metalworking. Their simple, earthy forms serve as blank slates for their abstract, narrative imagery created by layering colors of glass and adding frit, powdered glass, and steel fibers. Finally, the surface is acid-etched, giving the finished piece its soft, matte finish and stone-like appearance. In their new mixed media sculptures, Jeremy and Allison introduce found objects, reclaimed steel, and wood. According to the artists, “We use cultural artifacts as a way of exploring our relationship with the land and to remind us of our interconnection with nature, with each other, and with our collective past.”

Introducing the SpeakNOW Spoken Word Competition
This October, The Nature of Words will hold its first spoken word competition, titled SpeakNOW. Open to all high school students in Central Oregon, SpeakNOW is free to enter and winners receive a cash prize and read during the Rising Star Creative Writing Competition Awards Ceremony at the November Literary Festival.
SpeakNOW will take place on October 5 at 7 p.m. at PoetHouse Art, 856 NW Bond Street. Registration will start at 6:30 p.m. For more information, contact programs@thenatureofwords.org.

Up Next at The Storefront Project: Spoken Word, Flash Fiction and Poetry
Starting in September, The Storefront Project students will write poetry and flash fiction with Jasper Lotus Hawkins, a recent graduate of Nairopa University’s MFA program in Poetry. In October, students will write and perform spoken word poetry with Micah Bournes, a Bend-based spoken word artist.
The Storefront Project is a free, drop-in after school creative writing program open to all middle- and high-school students. Workshops are every Monday and Thursday from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. at NOW’s literary arts center at 224 NW Oregon Avenue. Students of all levels of experience are welcome.

Local Writers and Storefront Project Students Featured During First Friday
The Storefront Project students will be exhibiting their recent work at NOW’s literary arts center during the September First Friday Art Walk on September 2. Students will display broadsides, handbound books, and reading original poetry and stories from 5 to 8 p.m. On October 7, NOW’s First Friday will feature poet and short-story writer Suzanne Burns and poet and Crook County High School English teacher Jim Churchill-Dicks, reading their work from 5 – 8 p.m.

High Desert Chamber Music’s mission is to bring world class chamber music and musicians to Central Oregon. Now in its fourth season, HDCM has presented a broad range of chamber Groups, ranging from string trios to piano quintets. In addition to the Series is an Annual Benefit Gala held at the Broken Top Club, which includes a performance, dinner, silent auction and raffle. This will be held on November 12, 2011, 6:00pm. Seating requests are taken, and table reservations are recommended.

Tickets for all events are available through HDCM online or by phone. Seating is limited, so advance ticket purchase is highly recommended. General Admission is open seating, except for Season Tickets holders, who receive seating in a Reserved section and a 5% discount. This offer expires on opening night of the 2011-2012 season.

Throughout the event folks can sample traditional Bavarian style music, beers, wines, foods and absurd games of skill for prizes! The Downtown Bend Farmer’s Market will be moving to Mirror Pond South parking lot, a few yards from it’s current location in Drake Park, for the remaining 9 market Wednesdays of this season starting August 17th. The change of location presented the best temporary solution for a fully accessible, viable market that could remain in Downtown Bend. The DBBA will be working with the City, Farmer’s Market and the community to help determine the best new location downtown for next season that serves everyone’s needs.

The Downtown Bend Farmer’s Market is a wonderful community event, however, it is one that not everyone can access. Due to the grass and slope in Drake Park, people with disabilities and limited mobility are not able to enjoy our great market.
The DBBA is working closely with Farmer’s Market to improve this situation. Farmer’s Market has made several adjustments to the market to remove barriers to access and more changes are coming. It is our goal to have the market fully accessible as soon as possible.

Juniper Ridge: True Adams Company principals David Ditz and Jerry Mitchell, from January of 2009 through January of 2011, oversaw a multi-faceted project planning and entitlement effort for what is now referred to as the Employment Subdistrict of the City’s Juniper Ridge project. That effort resulted in a successfully-completed 225-acre zone change application for the first major phase of the 1,500-acre project from Urban Area Reserve to Light Industrial. The effort included the development of a Zoning Code Overlay for Juniper Ridge, negotiation of a comprehensive agreement with ODOT for the phased development of offsite traffic mitigation measures, development of comprehensive Design Guidelines, drafting of Covenants, Conditions and Restrictions (in a team effort with attorney Laura Craska Cooper of the local office of Ball Janik LLC), creation of an Owners Association, and establishment of a startup marketing program with Compass Commercial.

Commute Options Week a HUGE SUCCESS!!!!

Thousands participated in the Commute Options Week’s 21^st birthday celebration, individuals across Central Oregon learned how making more trips outside the family car can help create healthy vibrant communities.
Results of the Drive Less Challenge were impressive. Lucas Alberg from Bend Broadband won the grand prize-a custom made J Livingston bicycle from Bend Velo! This year, 287 individuals registered for the all new-Drive Less Challenge saving money and improving their health!
Total miles saved: 6,975.12
Bike Trips: 678
Walk Trips: 125
Carpool Trips: 292
That means:
15,235 motor vehicle miles eliminated
635 gallons of gas conserved saving participants over $10,000 in gas money which equals more than 500 pounds of Carbon Dioxide eliminated from our air.
Two companies in Bend did particularly well saving trips-special recognition goes to Advanced Energy, who as a group saved over $1000 at the gas pump among 37 participating employees. G5’s 40 participants reduced more than 900 miles during the week!
The region’s first tri-County Bicycle and Pedestrian Summit was held at the Madras Aquatic Center. A gathering of professionals from Crook, Deschutes and Jefferson counties to discuss current bicycle and pedestrian projects across the region. There was a special appearance by Dan Burden, community design expert.
Dan Burden spoke at St. Charles Bend! 160 people met the former National Geographic photographer turned sustainable community design promoter. Dan shared his perspective built from decades in the business of street design, traffic calming, living streets, public safety, bicycling, and greenways. Dan’s presentation showcased a holistic vision for creating healthy, livable, sustainable and prosperous communities. Thanks to City Club of Central Oregon and Kids@Heart for making Dan feel welcome in Bend!
From all over Oregon (and California!) Safe Routes to School advocates gathered in downtown Bend for the first ever “Walk + Bike Retreat and Trainings.” 65 individuals came together to share, teach and learn how we can get our communities moving. The Walk + Bike Retreat was sponsored by Commute Options, Bicycle Transportation Alliance and ODOT’s Safe Routes to School program.

The Nature of Words (NOW) is pleased to announce the slate of guest authors who will be featured at its 2011 literary festival, November 2-6, in Bend. The lineup includes a novelist and a poet whose works reflect their mixed race and cultures, an icon of the Western literary landscape, and a memoirist whose account of his unconventional childhood is laugh-out-loud funny and brutally honest.
Meet the 2011 Guest Authors
Augusten Burroughs‘ hilarious and caustic memoir about his unconventional childhood, Running With Scissors, was on the New York Times bestseller list for nearly three consecutive years. His subsequent title, Dry, about his battles with addiction, is also funny, brutally candid and inspiring. Burroughs, who has no formal education beyond grade school, moved to San Francisco at 19 and forged a highly successful career in advertising. He began writing at age 34 and his first published book, a novel titled Sellevision, was released in 2000. Burroughs has also written a collection of autobiographical essays titled Magical Thinking. His writing has appeared in numerous publications. Burroughs is known as an effective and unscripted speaker.
Heidi Durrow grew up as a child of two cultures and languages: an African-American enlisted Air Force man and a white Danish woman. Her debut novel, The Girl Who Fell From the Sky, received Barbara Kingsolver’s 2008 Bellwether Prize for Literature of Social Change, and was named one of the best novels of 2010 by the Washington Post, a Top 10 Book of 2010 by The Oregonian, and a Top 10 Debut of 2010 by Booklist. Durrow, originally from Portland, Ore., is a former corporate attorney, a former journalist, a former Life Skills trainer for NBA and NFL athletes, a podcaster and a festival producer.
William Kittredge, a renowned Western writer, is the recipient of The Nature of Words’ 2011 Caldera Special Recognition Award. He grew up on the cattle ranch his grandfather built in southeastern Oregon’s Lake County, the setting for his memoir, Hole in the Sky. Kittredge became a major cultural voice with his collection of essays, Owning It All, which was said to “map the emotional terrain of the West.” Kittredge taught at the University of Montana for 29 years, and now is Regents Professor of English and Creative Writing Emeritus. He has received numerous awards including a Stegner Fellowship at Stanford and Writing Fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts. Kittredge’s other work includes The Willow Field and The Next Rodeo: New and Selected Essays.

Nancy Mairs was born in Long Beach, Calif., and grew up north of Boston. She is one of the most highly respected writers of literary non-fiction and the personal essay. Mairs has taught writing and literature at the University of Arizona, and the University of California at Los Angeles. Mairs was awarded the 1984 Western States Book Award in poetry for In All the Rooms of the Yellow House. Mairs spiritual autobiography is titled Remembering the Bones. Other work includes A Troubled Guest: Life and Death Stories and Waist-High in the World: A Life Among the Nondisabled. She earned an MFA in creative writing and a Ph.D. in English literature from the University of Arizona, and is the recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts fellowship.
Seth Mnookin is an award-winning journalist and author. His most recent book, The Panic Virus: A True Story of Medicine, Science, and Fear, uses a combination of investigative reporting, intellectual and scientific history, and sociological analysis to explore the controversies over vaccines and their rumored connection to developmental disorders. He is also the author of the 2006 New York Times best seller about the rise of the Boston Red Sox, Feeding the Monster: How Money, Smarts, and Nerve Took a Team to the Top. Mnookin has written for The New York Times, The Washington Post, New York, Slate, Wired, and Spin.
Aimée Nezhukumatathil was born in Chicago to a Filipina mother and a father from South India. She is the author of three poetry collections: Lucky Fish, winner of the Hoffer Grand Prize for Prose and Independent Books; At The Drive-In Volcano, winner of the Balcones Prize; and Miracle Fruit, winner of the Tupelo Press Prize, ForeWord Magazine’s Book of the Year Award, and the Global Filipino Award. Poems and essays have appeared in publications including American Poetry Review, Ploughshares, Antioch Review, Slate, and Tin House, as well as many anthologies. She is Associate Professor of English at State University of New York-Fredonia.
Keith Scribner has worked as a carpenter, a merchant marine, and a Boston cabbie. He’s lived in Japan, Turkey, and France, and has traveled widely. His third novel, The Oregon Experiment, was released in June 2011. His two previous novels are The Good Life, a New York Times Notable Book of the Year, and Miracle Girl. Scribner’s work has appeared in numerous publications and anthologies including American Short Fiction, The North Atlantic Review, and Flash Fiction Forward. He was awarded Wallace Stegner and John L’Heureux Fellowships in Fiction at Stanford University. He teaches in Oregon State University’s MFA program and is a fellow at OSU’s Center for the Humanities.
Mark Spragg is the author of Where Rivers Change Direction, a memoir that won the 2000 Mountains & Plains Independent Booksellers award, and the novels, The Fruit of Stone, An Unfinished Life, and in 2010, Bone Fire. All four were top-ten Book Sense selections and An Unfinished Life was chosen by the Rocky Mountain News as the Best Book of 2004. Spragg’s work has been translated into fifteen languages. He lives in Wyoming with his wife, Virginia, with whom he wrote the screenplay for his novel, An Unfinished Life, starring Robert Redford and Morgan Freeman, and released in 2005.
Kevin Young is widely regarded as one of the leading poets of his generation. The author of six books of poems, and editor of five others, Young’s work has been frequently featured in The New Yorker, Ploughshares, and Kenyon Review. He often finds meaning and inspiration in African American music, particularly the blues, as well as in the complexities of American history and heartbreak. Collections include Ardency: A Chronicle of the Amistad Rebels and Dear Darkness. His awards and fellowships include a Stegner Fellowship in Poetry at Stanford University, a Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship, and an NEA Fellowship. He is currently Atticus Haygood Professor of Creative Writing and English and Curator of Literary Collections and the Raymond Danowski Poetry Library at Emory University.
About The Festival
The five-day November festival offers two nights of guest author readings and book signings in the Tower Theatre, two days of workshops, lectures and presentations on the OSU-Cascades and Central Oregon Community College campuses, a gala author dinner with a keynote speaker and brief author readings, and an Open Mic for workshop participants and the community. The festival begins with the Rising Star Creative Writing Competition Awards Ceremony, honoring emerging writers ages 15 and greater.

The Dirt Band Digs The Tower!

The iconic and influential Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, often cited as a catalyst for an entire movement in country rock and American roots music, comes to the historic Tower Theatre in Bend for a special show, Friday, July 29 at 8 p.m.
Both their groundbreaking album “Will The Circle Be Unbroken” and their recording of “Mr. Bojangles” are in the Grammy Hall of Fame. Their multi-platinum records and top ten hits, including “Fishin’ In The Dark,” have received four Grammy awards and five Country Music Award nominations.
The current Dirt Band line-up includes founding members Jeff Hanna and Jimmie Fadden, veteran banjoist John McEuen, and Bob Carpenter on keyboards and accordion. They are touring in support of their critically acclaimed album “Speed of Life.” Recent stops were at Bonnaroo Music Festival and Levon Helm’s Midnight Ramble.

DOWNTOWN BEND SEES 12 STOREFRONT CHANGES
Occupancy @ 92% as some new businesses start-up and several more move within downtown

The Downtown Bend Business Association is pleased to announce 7 new businesses opening, several more relocating within downtown and the current occupancy rate. Occupancy holds around 92%-a slight dip from the end of the first quarter. The rate is based upon the number of leased retail/restaurant spaces in the downtown district.
“Downtown retail and restaurant spaces look quite different overall from 3 months ago as twelve storefronts have new tenants. The decrease in our occupancy rate is minimal and we anticipate quite a few more spaces leased in the coming months as we work to match tenants with buildings, “says DBBA Executive Director Chuck Arnold.
Changes are seen all over downtown including Bond, Brooks, Franklin, Minnesota and Wall.
Bond Street sees two changes of businesses both relocating within downtown. Astro Lounge has leased and will soon open at 939 Bond, between Minnesota and Oregon Avenue with their same brand of good food, drinks and unique evening entertainment. Bond Street Market has relocated their convenience store at 844 Bond.
Brooks Street gained a new business this quarter in H. Davies Studio and Shop at 930 Brooks. H. Davies provides a variety of photographic works and operates as a functioning studio. Unique photo-based gifts are available as well.
Franklin Avenue has three new businesses this quarter. Bend Yogurt Factory at 744 Bond offers 21 flavors of frozen yogurt and tons of sweet toppings. Faveur is a new eclectic and unique boutique at 714 Franklin-next to Bend Burger Company. Finally, Ceylon Blu will open soon in the Franklin Crossing building 550 Franklin. The new salon situated in Tin Pan Alley across from the Connecting Point Computer parking lot will feature hair and other salon services.
Lulu’s Home Organic Home & Gift has opened at 130 Minnesota. The new shop features sustainable and organic gifts available nowhere else in Bend. Dream Pebbles Bath has relocated from Oregon Avenue to 112 Minnesota. The expanded shop features amazing soaps and scents. Also relocating along Minnesota is Top Leaf Mate Bar at 55 Minnesota. The mate bar which continues to feature the tea-like yerba mate South American drink in a variety of flavors is now located within the Wine Shop & Beer Tasting Bar.
Wall Street gains Bend D’Vine at 916 Wall which will feature fine wines from around the world along with bites of food and great live music. The wine shop and tasting bar is scheduled to open next month. Planker (a slang name given to skiers by snowboarders) Sandwiches has opened a delicious lunch option in the former Crepe Place space at 824 Wall. Moving up the street to 909 Wall is Cascade Cottons. The Bend logo wear shop offers the highest quality shirts, sweats and Bend logo gear.
The DBBA is a private nonprofit organization representing approximately 375 businesses and 85 property owners working to keep Downtown Bend vibrant. The organization is responsible for downtown beautification, cleaning and maintenance, marketing, events and keeping the business environment healthy. Joplin Relief Dinner

In response to the devastation here on our own shores, Common Table hopes to duplicate their incredible success in supporting relief efforts in Japan by holding a Joplin Relief Dinner Sunday, June 12^th from 5-9p. Entry is $20 for adults and $10 for children. All proceeds will go to Messenger College Disaster Relief or the American Red Cross – at the donor’s discretion.
As in the past, the culinary and musical arts community has stepped up to help out. Entertainment includes a live Skype-feed with Josh Hart of Make it Habit – on the ground in Joplin, and musical performances by The Prairie Rockets, Hilst & Coffey, Erin Cole-Baker & Friends and playing for the first time EVER: The Black Mountain Strangers (members of Black Strap and the Moon Mountain Ramblers). The Ozark-inspired Southern BBQ meal is shaping up between community food suppliers, some of the women who cooked the Japanese Relief meal, and Chef Frank Evans. In anticipation of a large number of attendees, Common Table has obtained a permit to have a stage for live music in Gasoline Alley for those waiting to enter.
The tornadoes in Joplin this May caused 122 (and counting) deaths, 8,000 buildings were destroyed and untold numbers of lives upended. The team at Common Table is excited to have the opportunity to gather the incredibly generous community of Central Oregon to show the love to our friends in Joplin, Missouri.

We have made progress, but we need everyone’s vigilance to keep downtown healthy.
Behavior issues, you know them when you run into them. First and most important thing to do if you want to help is call the police (541) 693-6911. Even the smallest quality of life issues are important to report. Negative behaviors should not be tolerated in our City.
A great deal of downtown is covered by the 2006 Bend Safe Kids Zone Ordinance. This ordinance like many similar ones around the country is intended to protect family friendly areas like our wonderful downtown. Help out downtown! Get empowered! Read the Safe Kids law and if you see a violation, don’t just walk away, get involved!
The music system on Mirror Pond Plaza and the regular events have definitely helped the situation there, but we need to do more!

Update on our efforts to keep things positive downtown…
Mirror Pond Plaza
- “Smile, you’re on camera” signs have been installed on Mirror Pond Plaza and have already had a positive impact.
- A music system that will help add to the positive atmosphere and will be available for events.
- Yoga classes will be held every Wednesday throughout the summer as we work to continue to encourage use of the space.
Downtown overall
- We have been working with the Police Department to deal with the small quality of life issues. Tickets are being issued for bike and skateboard riding on the sidewalk, smoking and more.
- Our Operations Manager Mike has been supervising several community service workers. We have been really staying ahead of the trash and graffiti.
- The Say NO to Panhandlers Campaign is getting good traction. We are working to educate all downtown employees to not give money to panhandlers, but to direct them to social services.

We know with summer coming there will be idle hands. Petty crimes and quality of life issues like negative behaviors usually increase in downtown. This year we are attacking the issue more aggressively than ever, but we need your help. In particular, PLEASE read and follow the “Say No to Panhandlers” information. We want to keep our downtown great!
Below is an update on our multi-pronged approach to address the behavior issues downtown and in particular on Mirror Pond Plaza.
Legislative
1. We have submitted a letter of support for a bill moving through the Oregon House which would address consumption of drugs by minors. The bill has an important hearing in Salem today. We have worked with Bend PD and Senator Telfer’s office on this bill and anticipate that if passed it will give law enforcement another tool to address the challenges on the plaza and throughout downtown.
Positive atmosphere
1. Mars Bistro has now opened the Mars Cart, a mobile street vendor with the same great food they had at restaurant on Minnesota for years. We have worked with them to have them on the plaza a few days a week to create activity there. We are also working on getting other activities and vendors on the plaza.
2. Arts Central is proceeding with a music system on the outside of the Rademacher House. The DBBA will fund the installation and Arts Central is funding the satellite radio subscription. We will be broadcasting Bach and other pleasant music onto the plaza. The system will also prove to be a great asset for events and activities on the plaza.
3. Mike, our operations manager along with our community service workers washed the breezeway late last week. We are in the plaza most every day (sometimes twice a day) cleaning. Keeping the area clean helps keep it positive.
4. The DBBA has funded numerous small repairs to railings and benches in the area that have been vandalized. We know that if we leave street furnishings broken, it invites more vandalism so staying on top of repairs is a crucial piece of a positive place.
5. We are working with Downtown Bend businesses on an internal “Say No to Panhandlers” campaign. This campaign was brought to us by Jeff Datwyler. He had used a similar approach in Salem. The campaign includes a message for downtown business owners and employees that giving to panhandlers only exacerbates their (and our) problems. The campaign directs people to give to social service agencies instead.
Enforcement
1. Bend PD has really stepped up on the enforcement side. Patrols have been regular downtown and we have noticed an improvement.
2. We are currently investigating cameras for the area as well.

Madhappy Lounge in downtown Bend is going to begin hosting a poetry slam on the second Tuesday of every month. Since the slam moved from 21+ event at Silver Moon to an all-ages slam at the Poet House a while back, there has been a call for another adults-only slam where poets can share and perform pieces of any content. Anything goes as poets duke it out for cash prizes and notoriety.
The first slam will be held at Madhappy on Tuesday, June 14th and will start at 8 p.m. The event is free, but there is a suggested donation of $3 to pay the poets and sweeten the pot.

Crescendo Bendo at the Tower Theatre will be a fun, unique, high-profile event that encapsulates all that Cascade School of Music strives to bring to Central Oregon. In its sixth year this event has been a tremendous success: the students love it, their teachers love it and it serves to bring together the musical community in a new and valuable way. The event attracts over 1500 attendees and 400 performers.
The goal is to celebrate the musical achievements of our aspiring musicians and reward their dedication and hard work with a chance to perform on the Tower Theatre’s prestigious and professional stage. It also elevates the profile of the school and strengthens the greater musical community. In addition to our students, we also provide performance opportunities for students of Oregon Music Teacher Association members and other private music teacher.
This year’s schedule includes four concerts featuring Cascade School of Music students and instructors:

- 4 pm Kids’ Keyboard Concert
- 6 pm Strings Concert

Other Bend Haiku Weekend Activities!
The weekend kicks off during First Friday Art Walk on Friday, June 3rdat 5pm with a free sake tasting and display of haiku at the Liberty Theatre (849 Wall Street), hosted by Haiku Oregon, Five Fusion and Columbia Distributing. The public is invited to write their own haiku for judging by an’ya – internationally renowned author and founder of Haiku Oregon, with the winner taking home a special bottle of Oregon One Sake.
Saturday, June 4th features a series of haiku presentations and readings at the Liberty Theatre starting at 9:00 am, with a fun Haiku Walk through Drake Park at 4:30 pm.

Our two hour historical tours along the river are in full swing and going on seven days a week at the customer’s convenience. The electric bikes are a lot of fun and we have worked with the Historical Society to dig up more of Bend’s interesting history than could possibly be presented in two hours. We are giving free test rides of the bikes for anyone considering purchasing and electric cruiser for fun or as a commute option. Also, with a continuously growing fleet of bikes we can accommodate virtually any customized tour customers can think of (breweries, nature, long distance), as well as bring the fleet to company and private events this summer.
Feel free to swing by the showroom from 11-3 Mon-Sat to give the bikes a ride or learn more about the developing cruiser bike community.

Students from The Nature of Words’ spring residency at Cascades Academy will join Tumalo Middle School students from Cada Casa’s S.P.I.T. (SPoken word Is Transformational) residency for a night of spoken word performances. The Nature of Words’ Cascades Academy residency featured zine-making with Rachel Lee-Carman and Cada Casa’s S.P.I.T. curriculum with Jason Graham (aka MOsley WOtta). Tumalo Middle School’s residency featured Graham teaching Cada Casa’s S.P.I.T curriculum.
The Spoken Word Showcase will be the first joint performance from The Nature of Words and Cada Casa. The event is free and open to the public.

Bend’s Shakespeare in the Park announces cast for Drake Park event
Royal Shakespeare Company of London’s Lisa Harrow to play the Queen of the Fairies in A Midsummer Night’s Dream
Lisa Harrow, member of the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and the Royal Shakespeare Company of London will lead the cast for the inaugural Shakespeare in the Park festival, to take place August 26 and 27, in Drake Park. Lay It Out Events, in partnership with Catcall Productions chose the Bard’s most famous comedy, A Midsummer Night’s Dream to open the festival.Harrow will play the role of Titania, Queen of the Fairies who is married to Oberon, to be played by noted Portland based actor, Michael Fisher-Welsh.
Harrow will be recognized from her many film and television roles including The Omen III – The Final Conflict, co-starring with Sam Neill and from the Masterpiece Theatre production of Nancy Astor in which she played the title role. Awards include the Australian Film Institute Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role for her performance in The Last Days of Chez Nous. Her stage credits include many notable Shakespearean roles such as leads in Twelfth Night opposite Judi Dench, Portia in The Merchant of Venice opposite Patrick Stewart, and Desdemona in Othello. Harrow also recently played the role of Eleanor in The Lion in Winter, following in the footsteps of the great Katharine Hepburn.
Fisher-Welsh is a 30 year veteran of Portland area theatre having performed at such theatres as Portland Center Stage, Artist’s Repertory Theatre, The New Rose Theatre, and Tygre’s Heart Shakespeare Company. He is familiar with the challenges of Shakespeare, having played the lead in Hamlet, Duke Orsino from Twelfth Night and Orlando in As You Like It.Rounding out the cast will be Christy Drogrosch playingHippolyta and Jason Maniccia as Theseus. Directing the famous comedy is Grant Turner, the Artistic Director of the award-winning Northwest Classical Theatre Company. Turner has directed acclaimed productions of The Merchant of Venice, Henry V and Ibsen’s Ghosts among others. As a performer, his roles include Hamlet, Romeo, Marc Antony and Puck in A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
“It’s beyond impressive when you look at the cast lineup and see how many Shakespearean roles this troupe has performed,” commented Sandy Henderson, Vice President of Lay It Out Events. “Collectively nearly all of the Bard’s most beloved plays are represented in their bios. We’re incredibly excited to bring Lisa Harrow, and the Northwest Classical Theatre Company to Bend, and we anticipate this event will be a highlight of the summer.”

Des Chutes Historical Museum Offers Heritage Walks for Downtown Bend During Summer
The Des Chutes Historical Museum announces guided Heritage Walks of Downtown Bend on Fridays and Saturdays during the summer season. Beginning Saturday, June 4 and running through Saturday, September 3, Heritage Walks will be offered Fridays at 1:00 p.m. and Saturdays at 11:00 a.m. Tours are included with Museum admission of $5.00 for general admission, $2.00 for youth 13-17, 12 and under are free.
The guided walks will highlight the prominent historical buildings, events, and people involved with downtown Bend’s heritage sites. Approximately an hour in length, visitors are encouraged to bring water, sunscreen and dress for the weather. Tours leave from the Museum.

The Environmental Center brings Bag It! the movie to McMenamins
for one night only on May 25th
Senate Bill 536 is currently working its way through Salem. The bill prohibits the use of single use plastic bags at retail check outs in Oregon. Oregonians use an estimated 1.7 billion plastic checkout bags every year. Plastic pollution has become a critical problem in our oceans, accounting for as much as 90 percent of the estimated 100 million tons of toxic trash that spirals 500 miles off the Oregon Coast. The movie, Bag It! takes a look at our daily use and dependence on plastic. “It’s a timely film considering what is happening with Senate Bill 536 right now,” says Mike Riley, Executive Director of the Environmental Center. “Hopefully the film will give us all a better understanding of why moving away from plastic bags and plastic in general, is an important step in protecting human health and the health of our environment.”

Milne’s children’s classic Wednesday, May 25, at 6 p.m., when the Tower Theatre Foundation presents “Winnie the Pooh.” This one-hour show, aimed at younger kids and featuring costumed actors and music, is set in a recreation of the Hundred Acre Wood. Join Christopher and his best friend Pooh as they follow Piglet on a Heffalump hunt. Watch Rabbit scheme to get rid of Kanga’s bathtub. Help Eeyore search for his tail. And learn a few lessons in friendship, loyalty and acceptance along the way.
With the talented performers of Sign Stage Productions, this family presentation is signed and spoken simultaneously, told by the hands and voices of deaf and hearing actors. The result is a magical blend of entertainment created when spoken English joins with the beauty of American Sign Language.
Sign Stage specializes in deaf and hearing actors performing together on stage. “When a character speaks, the actor uses sign language,” explains Ray Solley, Executive Director of the Tower Theatre. “The voice comes from a different actor speaking through a microphone, either on stage or often off stage. The merging of hand and body movements with words and music ensures all audience members—both deaf and hearing—fully understand everything. The result is riveting and uniquely visual
entertainment.”

The HOMESLICE Show Featuring Super Adventure Club Rocks Madhappy Lounge 4/29
LOUDgirl productions is excited to present The Homeslice Show, an evening of art, fashion, and music featuring the work of local artist Sarah Viles (creatively known as the Homeslice) and live music by San Francisco electro-rock duo Super Adventure Club. This unique event will take place at Madhappy Lounge in downtown Bend on Friday, April 29th at 9 p.m. and is free to attend. The Homeslice will present a collection of new collage/ mixed media pieces along with a fashion show featuring her handmade jewelry and styling. Super Adventure Club will provide the soundtrack to the evening and keep the party going well into the night.
About The Homeslice- The Homeslice, given name Sarah Viles, is originally from Prineville, but spent almost a decade in Los Angeles before returning to her roots in central Oregon. While in LA, Sarah worked as a stylist and owned her own boutique in Hollywood. The urban edginess and colorful multiplicity of LA continue to infuse her art, jewelry and fashion, but so do her country roots and tribal heritage. Her one-of-a-kind creations incorporate vintage and comic, edgy and traditional, and her juxtaposition of native, folk-art and pop culture elements present delicious irony and beauty for contemplation.
Sarah was recently asked to contribute a piece to the PUSH skate deck auction benefiting the Division Street Skate Park, where her custom-made comic collage deck earned one of the highest bids of the evening. She has shown her work at The Poet House, Rescue Moderne Consignment and other locations, but this will be her first official show in Bend.
About Super Adventure Club- San Francisco experimental pop duo Super Adventure Club was convened in 2007 by producer Michael Winger (Kronos Quartet, The Shins) and session drummer Jake Wood (Diego’s Umbrella, Nya Jade) to explore pop music beyond the boundaries of genre. On their debut 2009 LP Üntz for Freshmaker Records, Wood plays drums, keyboards and sings simultaneously, while Winger plays keyboards, bass guitar and handles lead vocals. Singing in four languages, the duo shifts from Talking Heads-like indie rock to electronic dance music and beyond. Along with tours of the West Coast and the Pacific Northwest, Super Adventure Club also tours Spain, while writing and recording a second album.

FAKE TELEMARKETERS TARGETING OREGON BUSINESSES
In recent days the Oregon Department of Justice has received numerous
complaints about a phone scam targeting Oregon businesses. The fake
telemarketers pose as state employees calling from Business Oregon, the
Oregon Business Development Department, or similar name variations of the
state’s lead economic development agency. The callers inquire whether the
business has moved recently and the size of their workforce. Oregon Attorney
General John Kroger and Business Oregon warn businesses not to respond to
these fake phone calls.
Based on the complaints received to date, the scam telemarketers are calling
from: 1-800-247-4047. If your business receives a call from 1-800-247-4047
do not answer and inquire with your phone company about how to block
receiving calls from this number.
Oregon businesses are not the sole target of this telemarketing scam,
rather, similar calls have been made to Washington, Minnesota, California,
Colorado and Canadian businesses. In each instance, the fake telemarketers
tell businesses they are with the state economic development office and ask
for moving and employee information. In several cases, when a business has
responded to the questions asked, new monthly charges appeared on the
business’ phone bill. Oregon Department of Justice investigators are looking
into this scam right now, but one theory is that the callers are trying to
“cram” new services onto the business’ phone bill. “Cramming” has been
around since the deregulation of the telephone industry and happens when a
company adds a charge to a phone bill for a service that was never
requested, agreed to, or used.
If your business received a call from the fake telemarketers and your
business answered any questions both Attorney General Kroger and Business
Oregon recommend contacting your phone service provider immediately to
prevent erroneous charges from being added to your phone bill.

The City of Bend Art, Beautification and Culture Commission is currently seeking nominations for individuals, organizations and businesses who made significant contributions to the celebration, promotion, beautification or preservation of the City’s arts, culture, natural environment or public spaces in 2010. Make your nomination now! Nominations are due by April 23, 2011.
Award consideration will include residential, commercial and governmental beautification projects, multicultural and historical cultural events and programs, visual, performing and literary art programs and products.
