Drinking more water has many health benefits, so it’s no wonder we put “drink more water” on our list of New Year’s Resolutions. It right up there with “eat less chocolate.” So what are some of those amazing benefits that come with drinking more water? Well we found a natural remedy site that lists them off for you. Drinking water never looked so appealing.
1. Lose weight: Drinking water helps you lose weight because it flushes down the by-products of fat breakdown. Drinking water reduces hunger, it’s an effective appetite suppressant so you’ll eat less. Plus, water has zero calories. Here are the further details on how to achieve fat loss by drinking water.
2. Natural Remedy for Headache: Helps to relieve headache and back pains due to dehydration. Although there are many other reasons contribute to headache, dehydration is the common one.
3. Look Younger with Healthier Skin: You’ll look younger when your skin is properly hydrated. Water helps to replenish skin tissues, moisturizes skin and increase skin elasticity.
4. Better Productivity at Work: Your brain is mostly made up of water, thus drinking water helps you think better, be more alert and more concentrate.
5. Better Exercise: Drinking water regulates your body temperature. You’ll feel more energetic when doing exercises and water helps to fuel your muscle.
6. Helps in Digestion and Constipation: Drinking water raises your metabolism because it helps in digestion. Fiber and water goes hand in hand so that you can have your daily bowel movement.
7. Less Cramps and Sprains: Proper hydration helps keep your joints and muscles lubricated, so you’ll less likely get cramps and sprains.
8. Less Likely to Get Sick and Feel Healthy: Drinking plenty of water helps fight against flu and other ailments like kidney stones and heart attack. Water adds with lemon is used for ailments like respiratory disease, intestinal problems, rheumatism and arthritis etc. Another words one of the benefits of drinking water can improve our immune system. Follow this link for further information on how lemon water can improve your health.
9. Relieves Fatigue: Water is used by the body to help flush out toxins and waste products from the body. If your body lacks of water, your heart, for instance, need to work harder to pump out the oxygenated blood to all cells, so are the rest of the vital organs, your organs will be exhausted and so are you.
10. Good Mood: Your body feels very good and that’s why you feel happy.
11. Reduce the Risk of Cancer: Related to the digestive system, some studies show that drinking a healthy amount of water may reduce the risks of bladder cancer and colon cancer. Water dilutes the concentration of cancer-causing agents in the urine and shortens the time in which they are in contact with bladder lining.
And what better way to reap those H2O benefits than with a double-wall, vacuum-sealed Hydro Flask water bottle. Easy, affordable and reusable, much better than buying bottled water.

Sledding is a fun winter activity that the whole family can enjoy. It involves no skill, is inexpensive and a complete blast. It offers a chance to enjoy the outdoors and trekking up those hills offers some great exercise. Here are some things to remember for your next sledding adventure.
Dress appropriately! Most likely you will be taking some spills and end up covered in snow white powder, so come prepared. Wear good winter boots, snow pants and a coat. Good gloves are even more important since you spend a lot of time steering with your hands in the snow and they get cold and wet fast. Layering clothes is always a good idea. If you get warm you can always take off a layer.
When sledding with little ones, take a grown up trial run first. It’s good to know what the conditions of the hill are before the kids hit it. A hill could be powdery and slow one day and an icy luge track the next.
Make sure your child is comfortable with sledding. Sledding can be a fun family event but also can be a little scary for younger kids. Reassure them that you are there and it is fun and safe. Never force a child down a hill to face their fears. Start out small and build up.
Pick the right sled for you. This is purely up to you, but each type of sled offers benefits in different snow conditions. Toboggans are great in powder, runner sleds are ideal in more packed snow and offer an element of steering, saucers have limited control but are a spinning good time, basic plastic sleds are a good balanced all around sled, inner tubes can be fun and bouncy but you often go flying off when you hit bumps and jumps (we don’t recommend these for children), inflatable sleds are ok but can pop easily with a stray rock or branch. Don’t take your sledding advice from Charlie Brown–cardboard boxes are not ideal.
Remember to be aware of other sledders. A popular hill in your area can mean a ton of people. A sledding collision can mean a potentially serious injury. The best thing you can do is just be aware of those around you. It’s like driving, only down a hill of snow and ice and with less control.
Finding a sledding hill near you is usually pretty easy. Most golf courses are closed during the winter and many have a lot of rolling hills which are great for young children. Parks are also a good bet to find a great hill. Check with your local ski resort also; a lot of them have sledding hills with tow ropes and inexpensive tickets.
Our favorite piece of sledding advice? Keep a Hydro Flask of hot cocoa near by! Hydro Flask’s double-wall vacuum-insulated bottles keep liquid hot for up to 12 hours so you can enjoy swigs of nice warm hot cocoa during your entire sledding outing. Or keep it in the car for a warm up treat on the way home.
Have fun out there!
Most people take road trips to see the landscape of America during the summer. These trips can be lovely and full of fun, but if you really want to take a serious road trip, do it in the winter. For the real adventurer a long winter road trip may be just the thing.
Making the proper preparations for a winter road trip are simple yet very necessary. Since driving conditions can change drastically, it is important to have adequate tires, a full spare tire, snow chains, blankets, a flashlight, snacks, plenty of water (a Hydro Flask filled with luke warm water is ideal) and an emergency kit.
Be sure to get an oil change and check all your fluids before leaving.
Find and map out winter destinations and activities you want to hit while on your trip. Don’t get too attached to any of them, though–you never know what driving conditions will be like so you don’t want to be disappointed when you get stranded in a town because of a blizzard. This is a chance to experience a different side of the countryside. The snow-covered scenery takes on a new mysterious vibe than the golden and green views of summer.
It can also be a good test of patience. Go slowly–and remind yourself that safety is first.
With proper preparation and planning, your winter road trip can be filled with fun and adventure you never would have guessed possible in the winter months.
The New Year is approaching fast which means, yep you guessed it, New Year’s Resolutions. It’s a time to make a commitment to better yourself–whether it’s a goal to loose weight, learn something new or get out of debt. Here are some interesting statistics on New Year’s Resolutions:
45% of Americans usually set New Year’s Resolutions, 17% infrequently set resolutions, 38% absolutely never set resolutions.
Only 8% of people are always successful in achieving their resolution. 19% achieve their resolution every other year. 49% have infrequent success. 24% (one in four people) never succeed and have failed on every resolution every year. That means 3 out of 4 people almost never succeed.
With numbers like those, setting a Resolution doesn’t sound too appealing, but there are some things you can do to help your success. Set a “theme-based” resolution rather than a “goal-based” resolution. This will increase your participation throughout the year.
At Hydro Flask we suggest a simple New Year’s Resolution that is easy to succeed with, like, “Get outside more often and drink more water.” Easy right?! Eat lunch outside in the park, go for a fifteen minute walk after work, ride your bike to your destination, and always bring a Hydro Flask.
Hydro Flask is here to say, “Yes you can! Hydrate your life with water and fun experiences this New Year!” Get out and get active as you hydrate for success.
We asked our Hydro Flask fans to send pictures of them getting Hydro Flask bottles for Christmas, Here are some of the happy recipients. We are so glad our double-wall hydration goodness brought so much joy this holiday season!
Check out all these happy Hydro Flask recipients!
Searching for a winter activity that the whole family can enjoy? Try bird watching. It is a fun, relaxing way to enjoy nature and get out of the house. Even all you adventure junkies will welcome the quiet and peace that comes with being still.
There are plenty of activities in all areas involving bird watching. A good resource is the National Audubon Society. You can look up a local chapter in your area from their site as well.
Things to bring with you include binoculars, a note pad to jot down the species you see, a bird guide for identifying species, proper clothing and a Hydro Flask full of water. Hydro Flask’s looped cap makes it easy to hook to a belt loop or backpack for hands-free bird watching. Plus the double-wall vacuum-sealed bottle keeps warm liquids hot for up to twelve hours so you can have tea in the woods.
Bird watching can be a fun activity for young ones as a way of introducing them to nature. Get them a notebook so they can draw the birds they see. Help them interact with their surroundings and search the bird guide together. It is a great way to make learning fun.
Put out a bird feeder in your backyard to bring the bird watching home. It’s an easy way to see what species are living in your neighborhood.
Bring the family together this winter season and head out on some bird watching nature hikes. It’ll be a family activity everyone will enjoy, especially if you sprinkle in hot cocoa pit stops along your hike. Happy watching!
So you want to do a Polar Bear Plunge. Congratulations, you’re crazy. This New Year’s tradition of running in to freezing cold water is held at countless locations across the nation and world. Some Polar Bear Plunges are used as fundraisers for charitable organizations, some for promotion, and some just for the heck of it. Regardless of your reasoning to submerge your body into an icy body of water there are a couple things you should remember.
Besides searching the internet, a good way to find a Polar Bear Plunge in your area is to call one of the popular local radio stations–they are usually up on events like this. Above all, have fun and be safe with a Polar Bear Plunge; the perfect way to hydrate your New Year.

We received a great testimonial from Justin Roote who recently won our Most Decorated Flask Contest through our Facebook page. Justin’s frustration with trying to keep his beverages cold all day long led him to discover the awesomeness of a double-wall vacuum insulated Hydro Flask water bottle. Read on for his testimonial.
From Justin Roote: I enjoy my drinks very cold, and I have looked everywhere to find something to keep them that way, everything i cap up with either took up so much room, weighted 5 lbs, be sweating in five min, or be room temp after 30 min unless you froze it, and then you couldn’t drink it until it melted, and all awhile getting wet in the mean time.
I got two Hydro-Flasks, hoping to solve this problem, one for both my wife and I, and haven’t had a warm drink since, I keep two ice pop makers in the freezer, plop them in, and were ready to go for the whole day, even if there’s any left over it goes on my dresser, all to awake the next morning to a little rattle of a chip of ice leftover.
And to give you an idea of how good they work, we took a trip to the Bronx Zoo and spent the whole day, needless to say it was the hottest day of the year, so hot, that the back of my shirt changed to theta color of my backpack. I had a spare bottle of water in my backpack just in case I went threw my whole flask, which I did, so I filled it back up with warm water, but since my Hydro Flask was so cold and still had ice, it chilled the warm water for the ride home.
Absolutely the best bottle I’ve ever bought!!!
Thanks Justin for your great testimonial and congratulations on winning the Most Decorated Flask Contest on Facebook!

If this isn’t the time of year for a Hydro Hot Toddy, I don’t know when is. One of our only complaints with this drink is it tends to go cold too fast. Solution, serve it in a Hydro Flask bottle, duh.
2 oz (2 tablespoons) bourbon
2 tablespoon mild honey
4 teaspoons fresh lemon juice
1/2 cup boiling-hot water
1 cinnamon stick
Put bourbon, honey, and lemon juice in a small sized Hydro Flask. Top off with hot water and stir until honey is dissolved. Add cinnamon stick, put cap on and let brew for a minute to let the cinnamon flavor out. Unscrew, drink and enjoy.
Add another twist of lemon for an extra bite or cloves for some spiciness if desired. Brandy or Scotch also works well instead of Burbon. Makes two servings.
Getting sick is bad for adventure. Nothing is worse than having to pass up a gorgeous day on the slopes because of a bad case of the sniffles. Help stave off cold and infection by following some simple habits to help maintain your body’s natural resistance against sickness.
The American Red Cross is offering the following tips to stay healthy this flu season.
Take these common sense steps to stop the spread of germs
So many times people tend to forget the “drink plenty of liquids” tip before it’s too late. Incorporating a Hydro Flask double-walled vacuum-sealed water bottle into your daily routine is a simple way to ensure that you stay properly hydrated throughout your day. It’s a convenient way to make sure you’re giving your best performance while participating in winter activities like skiing. Simply put luke-warm water in your Hydro Flask and go out adventuring. Our specially designed water bottles keep liquids hot up to 12 hours and cold up to 24 so the luke-warm water won’t be too hot, or too cold when you need a gulp while on the slopes. It is also easy to clean and can handle any liquid without staining or retaining smell. Have your O.J. in the morning and hot tea in the afternoon.
Take smart precautions this winter and stay happy, healthy and active.

Hydro Flask is the world’s best water bottle. A big part of what make them so great is yes, the fact that they keep liquids cold for 24 hours and warm for 12 hours and all that fabulous jazz, but another key feature is our awesome caps.
Hydro Flask water bottles come standard with our signature loop screw top caps. But we also have interchangeable sports bottle tops for users who don’t want to uncap every time they take a drink.
Did you know that the regular screw cap can be used like a thermos? Simply unscrew it halfway you can still pour liquid out of it just like a thermos. We have also made some nice improvements with the caps recently. We’ve made the caps sleeker with a lower profile while still maintaining the standard 1 and ¾ turn. And, we improved the durability. Also every cap is now vented for hot liquid so they release steam build-up as you unscrew the cap.
We hope you appreciate the new improvements we’ve made. Keep the adventure alive!
Americans just don’t get outside much anymore, and we are paying for it. The impact on our mental and physical health is not pretty. An article recently from the New York Times outlines American’s “outdoor deprivation disorder” and how what steps are needed to remedy this problem.
From The New York Times: The resulting lack of physical activity and a growing disconnect with the natural environment have been linked in a host of studies to obesity and obesity-related diseases in children and adults, including Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, asthma and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, as well as vitamin D deficiency, osteoporosis, stress, depression, attention deficit disorder and myopia. Dr. Daphne Miller, a family physician affiliated with the University of California, San Francisco, calls them “diseases of indoor living.”
The National Wildlife Federation, which established the “Be Out There” public-education campaign to foster a daily “green hour” during which every child could enjoy 60 minutes of unstructured play and interaction with the natural world. On its Web site, www.nwf.org, the federation has posted the rationale and specific suggestions for schools and families to counter the physical, emotional and educational drain of an “indoor childhood.”
The campaign’s mission “is to return to the nation’s children what they don’t even know they’ve lost: their connection to the natural world,” with activities suitable for all children, whether rural, suburban or urban.
As for its health and educational benefits, the federation cites scientific findings that outdoor play enhances fitness, raises blood levels of vitamin D (which in turn protects against bone loss, heart disease, diabetes and other health problems), improves distance vision, lowers the risk of nearsightedness, reduces symptoms of stress and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, raises scores on standardized tests and improves students’ critical-thinking skills.
America is the most overweight country in the world with over 30% of our population considered obese, plus another 30% considered overweight. The prescription is simple– spend more time outside! At Hydro Flask we want to help get America back on track, fight the sedentary lifestyle and encourage everyone to spend quality time outside. And don’t forget–while being active outdoors, it’s important to stay hydrated! With studies suggesting the obesity rate in America will hit 42 percent by 2050 we encourage everyone to get out there and get active for a more healthy future.

Okay so maybe it’s because it’s cold season and we are fighting a case of the sniffles, or maybe we feel the need for something a little healthier than the rum-laden egg nog we love so much this time of year. Whatever the case, we love the energy boost that a tasty fruit smoothie offers. Fight away that oncoming cold with this fruit smoothie packed with antioxidants and vitamin C.

One cup frozen blue berries

Of the many reasons to love your Hydro Flask is the lifetime warranty. Most water bottle companies barely offer a limited warranty let alone a lifetime warranty. We know our customers are some of the most adventurous types and that they put their water bottles through hell. We designed our bottles to withstand just about everything–should you find yourself dropping it while rock climbing or accidentally run over it while camping, it probably won’t break. However if it does break as a result of a manufacturing defect, we will gladly give you a replacement, no questions asked. The warranty is as follows:
We are so convinced that Hydro Flasks® are the best vacuum-sealed insulated bottles available that we unconditionally guarantee every Hydro Flask against manufacturer’s defects for 100 years or one lifetime, whichever comes first! There’s no warranty card to fill out or receipt to hang onto. Here’s how to take advantage of the unconditional lifetime warranty:
Don’t worry about taking your Hydro Flask back to the store where you purchased it.

If we determine that your Warranty Claim is NOT the result of a manufacturer’s defect, you will be responsible for paying to have your Hydro Flask shipped back to you.

With the onset of cold weather, thought of exercising in frigid temperatures doesn’t seem too appealing for many people. But with the proper preparation, a cold weather workout can be a beneficial way to cure the holiday blues and spice up your winter exercise regime. Our friends at Livestrong.com have made a list of cold weather exercise tips for those who want to brave the elements. At Hydro Flask, we feel especially strongly about tip number two. After all, proper hydration is the key to any workout, cold weather or not.
Layer Up
Many cold weather outdoor exercise enthusiasts make the mistake of dressing too warmly, according to the Mayo Clinic. Because exercise generates heat, you could feel up to 30 degrees F warmer than the outdoor temperature, once you get going. But when you start to slow down and the sweat on your body begins to dry, you can begin to feel chilled. One solution is to dress in layers and remove them as you need to. The first layer should be something made of polypropylene, which draws sweat away from your body. Fleece makes a good second layer, as it provides insulation, and the third layer should be something waterproof.
Stay Hydrated
You can lose body fluids through sweat even in cold weather, so it is important to stay hydrated, the University of Alabama says. To remain optimally hydrated, try to drink eight to 12 cups of water a day, and at least 2 cups of water about two hours before exercising. Then, drink 1 cup of water about half an hour to 15 minutes before exercising, and 1/2 to 1 cup of water every 15 to 20 minutes during exercise. It is just as important to stay hydrated after exercise, as well, and to drink enough water to satisfy your thirst.
Protect Your Extremities
It is important to wear a head covering when exercising in cold weather, as up to 50 percent of body heat is lost through your head, according to the University of Virginia School of Medicine. Gloves will help prevent your hands getting cold, however, mittens are better if you have them. Apply sunblock of 15 or higher, which will help protect from sunburn that can occur when exercising in snow or high altitudes, the Mayo Clinic suggests. Also, wear a lip balm that contains sunscreen.
Watch the Weather Forecast
Cold temperatures combined with heavy winds create a wind chill, and it is often best to stay indoors on these days, suggests SparkPeople. Wind pulls heat away from your body, which makes it difficult for your body to stay warm. In addition, if your body becomes too cold, you are at risk for developing hypothermia, a condition that causes an extremely low body temperature, and can be dangerous. Also, avoid icy sidewalks and streets. These conditions are hazardous and can cause serious injury.
Frostbite Warning
If you suspect you have frostbite, which is characterized by paleness, numbness or a loss of feeling, and is especially common on the face, fingers and toes, it is best to get of the cold as quickly as possible and into a warmer environment, the Mayo Clinic advises, where you should begin to slowly warm the affected area. However, if numbness occurs, you should seek emergency care. Take precautions against this condition by warming your hands and feet every 20 to 30 minutes while you are outside.

We received this testimonial from Jeff Stantliff who recently returned with his wife from a trip to China where their Hydro Flasks played a big part in their trip.
From Jeff Stantliff:
We decided to travel to Beijing and had just ordered a few hydro flasks online. We decided that we loved the fact that our ice water would stay cold for so long that we would take our flask on our trip instead of buying water bottles all of the time. Before we left I noticed that people were sending photos of places they had traveled with their hydro flask. Cute idea I thought.
Once we arrived in Beijing we came to find there is no ice in Beijing. There is no cold water offered in Beijing. They like to drink things warm or in the case of water – hot! Luckily we found that Starbucks would give us a glass of ice when we bought a coffee. What a lifesaver! Everyday we would hunt down the ice, fill our hydro flask and with all of our exploring the ice would last easily until the night day!
We visited a lot of really great places – Forbidden City, Great Wall, shopping and our flask went everywhere with us. Thank you for the wonderful product that kept us hydrated and enjoying our Beijing trip. Ice is a very precious commodity. Our interpreter could not understand why we keep taking pictures of our hydro flask, I even have her holding it in one picture. I asked if she would like her tea to stay hot for 24 hours, I don’t think she believed me, I’m putting one of mine in the mail to her this week. My wife is moving to Beijing the first of December for a 3-year work contract and she has already warned me that she wants one of each size.
Now that we are home, everyone is commenting on our hydro flask photos. Needless to say, we have quite few friends and families that have added Hydro flask to their Christmas list!
Thanks Jeff for your great testimonial!

We told you about Trevor Thomas and Team Farsight’s amazing accomplishment as the first hiking team with a blind member to hike the Pacific Crest Trail Hydro Flask in tow. Trevor was recently on television talking about why he hikes these epic trails, and what is next for him. There are some great Hydro Flask shots in the video as well.
“We don’t do it for the picture at the top of the summit, you do it for the achievement, I mean, anybody can get a picture at the top of the summit, you go to the ranger station at the bottom of the hill,” he said. “I can’t see the pictures we get at the summit but I can feel it, I can hear it. It’s an accomplishment and that’s why I do it.”

You hear it every year: the holiday season isn’t just a time for presents, lights and decorations. It’s a time for thankfulness, togetherness and giving. But this year, consider truly taking the old adage to heart. Really think about what it means to help neighbors in need, and look around for opportunities to make it happen. Fortunately, you don’t have to look too far. In addition to our regular 5% Back Program, Hydro Flask is helping those in need by giving back within our local community. Hydro Flask is holding a donation drive called Hydro Flask’s Caring Campaign at our World Headquarters in Bend from November 1st through February 1st. We are accepting donations of food (including pet food), camping equipment, toiletries, propane and warm clothing. All collected food will be donated to Neighbor Impact, and all other items will be going to Shepherd’s House. We have large donation bins set up inside our front doors weekdays from 8am–5pm.
If you can’t make it to World Headquarters, you can make monetary donations at the Neighbor Impact and Shepherd’s House websites, linked above. You can also make a difference in your own community by donating to your local food bank, shelter or soup kitchen. Every donation makes and impact and many will benefit and appreciate your efforts and generosity.
We don’t just want to help–we want to make a HUGE difference. So please help make Hydro Flask’s Caring Campaign HUGE! We’re asking for your support. Come see us Mon-Fri any time between 8am and 5pm at World Headquarters, say hey and drop off the items that will help your neighbors in need.
Thank YOU!
So, yeah. It appears that snow is flying all over the west today. Chairs are rollin’ already on many ski areas, with more set to open this weekend. Folks are throwing elbows for first chair on the first day, and it can get pretty agro out there! So, if you’re all antsy pantsy to get on the hill, be sure to keep safety in mind. Not just helmets and scoping huck landings–I’m talking about your fitness! Be sure to ward off early season injury by starting off the season fit and in shape. Here are some tips for getting into ski shape.
To prepare your heart and body for long-term skiing try this workout from TheSkiChannel.com.
Your cardio program should include 3 to 5 days each week of your favorite activity (the best for skiing include running, stairmaster, step aerobics, elliptical trainer and rollerblading). Try to have a variety of workouts lasting from 20 to 45 minutes. Below is a sample schedule of workouts, just to give you some ideas. These are just examples, so feel free to make your own schedule.
Workout 1: Interval training, 20 to 30 minutes
Workout 2: Medium-pace workout, 40 minutes
Workout 3: Short, intense workout, 20 minutes
Workout 4: Medium-pace workout, 45 minutes
Workout 5: Long, slow workout, 60 minutes
Remember to focus not only on your strength and stamina but also balance. Since you generally don’t ski as well towards the end of your day, balance is an important skill that helps keep you on top of the powder, not in it. As part of a work out program from sierratradingpost.com this is an easy balance improving exercise:
Stand on one leg with your knee bent and your arms tight against your sides. Balance for 10-30 seconds, bend your knee a little more and hold for 10-30 more seconds. Repeat on each leg several times. To make it more challenging, stand on a pillow and close your eyes.
In addition to a basic workout that includes general conditioning, agility practice, aerobic and anaerobic conditioning and leg work firsttracksonline.com recommends not to exercise the day before you ski.
If you hammer the slopes on the weekend, take Friday off so that you’ve completely recovered from any exercise fatigue You ought to feel the benefits of this program after two weeks.
In addition to having a solid workout regimen to help prepare you for the ski season it’s important to stay properly hydrated both on and off the slopes. Even though it’s cold out while skiing we sweat more than we think so it’s always important to take in your liquids to prevent cramping and dehydration. Easiest way to wet your whistle while on the slopes is of course carrying a Hydro Flask water bottle in your pack. Plus a Hydro Flask water bottle keeps liquids warm for up to 12 hours, so you can warm up with some hot coco while riding the chairlift.
We hope these tips help you to stay out longer, ski harder and of course have fun this winter!

Brentwood “Hig” Higman and Erin Kitterick have conquered a huge challenge. In June 2007 they started walking north out of Seattle, Washington. Twelve months more than 4000 miles later, they came to a stop at the end of the Aleutian Islands in Alaska. By foot, pack raft and skis, the couple made the trek to raise awareness on conservation issues facing their home of Alaska.
They have put out a feature-length documentary chronicling the journey called, “Journey on the Wild Coast” which will debut at the Anchorage International Film Festival this December. They also wrote a book, A Long Trek Home available on their website. Through their non-profit organization, Ground Truth Trekking, Erin and Hig are dedicated to bring awareness to issues like coal mining and oil drilling in the Alaskan wilderness.
Erin and Hig are currently field-testing Hydro Flasks, and we’re excited that our bottles are part of their adventures. Visit their website here to learn more on their epic trek along the Pacific Coast.

Just go (and “like”) the Hydro Flask Facebook page and write your idea under the contest heading. We’ve already got some awesome ideas posted, but we will wait until tomorrow to make our decision and crown the winner!

We’re confident that we make the best water bottle out there, but we like it when others get excited too. AdventureChronicles.net recently reviewed Hydro Flask water bottles and were blown away by our product. Here’s an excerpt from the review:
The flask does not sweat and with its double wall vacuum insulation it keeps the morning coffee hot for 12 hours and the afternoon ice tea cold for up to 24 hours. If this seems a little out of the ordinary don’t question it. We tested it and were pleased to find it true.
They also addressed our features we’re proud of, like the fact that we only create vacuum sealed double walled stainless steel walls, and our original 5% back program. Most importantly, the review includes some important information about WHY it’s more than just a good idea to use reusable water bottles.
The Pacific Institute estimates that in 2006: Producing the bottles for American consumption required the equivalent of more than 17 million barrels of oil, not including the energy for transportation; Bottling water produced more than 2.5 million tons of carbon dioxide; and it took 3 liters of water to produce 1 liter of bottled water. We have heard statistics that in America along we throw away around 100,000 plastic bottles everyday.
Adventure Chronicles does a great job highlighting stories of exciting times, people and places, and we encourage everyone to subscribe to their RSS Feed and read them often. We are extremely pleased to have been featured on their site. Click here to read the full review by Adventure Chronicles.

Six years ago, doctors diagnosed Trevor Thomas with an eye degenerate eye disease. They didn’t know what caused it. They only knew it would cause him to go blind. Rather than let his adventurous lifestyle of backcountry skiing, mountain biking and skydiving slip away with his eyesight, he found a new sport. After hearing a speech given by a blind hiker at an event, he became inspired. He went to his local sporting goods store and bought a pair of trekking poles and decided to dive into hiking. He quickly became a confidant and accomplished trail hiker. In the Spring of 2008 he became the first blind person to finish a solo thru-hike of the Appalachian Trail.
Once completing a task everyone thought impossible, he decided he wanted to be the first blind person to complete the Pacific Crest Trail and the Continental Divide Trail. After loads of research and planning, he put together a team including Chad Zandy and Amber Collins. The team, Team Farsight, tackled and bagged the Pacific Crest Trail from the Mexico/California border up to Vancouver, British Columbia in Canada.
Challenged by record snowfall, extreme winds and even an emergency root canal, the team pushed onward on a trail that boasted a 70-percent dropout rate. Along the way, Trevor became the first blind person to summit Mt. Whitney, the highest peak in the Continental United States. Upon reaching Canada on September 25th, 2010, Team Farsight became the first team to hike the Pacific Crest Trail with a blind team member. Trevor is now putting his focus on planning his hike along the Continental Divide Trail.
Trevor’s determination, grit and drive to overcome unexplainable obstacles is truly an inspiration for any and all sportsmen and women.
We are honored to support Team Farsight–and we’re pleased that Hydro Flask bottles got to come along on this amazing adventure. For more on Team Farsight visit their Facebook page here.
It’s been an odd mix of mourning and celebration as the world of Professional Surfing suffered an emotional roller coaster last week. On November 2nd, three time World Champion Andy Irons passed away in his hotel room in Dallas. The surfing community lost a great athlete and friend.
Then just four days later, veteran surfing mega-weight Kelly Slater won his unprecedented 10th World Title. Fierce competitors, Slater and Irons have been horn-locked on the waves for the past decade. Pushed by the younger upstart talent of Irons, Slater rose to new heights. Slater dedicated his 10th win to Irons. Watch Slater’s emotional response to his win here.
If you haven’t heard, the Ironman World Championships are this weekend. I’ll be heading over to watch later in the week. But we just got an update from a Hydro Flask enthusiast who is over there now.
Kathy writes:
I am in Kona, Hi, volunteering for the Iroman World Championship. I specifically purchased the Hydro Flask for this trip. I spend 3 hours a day, up until race day, on the water in a kayak for the Water Safety Patrol. We watch out for the swimmers and keep them on course and out of boat traffic. My Hydro Flask is amazing!!! My water is just as cold as it was when I hit the water, 2 hours later. The windmill picture is taken on the north end of the Big Island, near Hawi.
I live in Ontario OR and am excited to own a product of Oregon. Nice job and great idea.
Thanks again for your great product and I hope to purchase a larger size when I get home. With it being so hot here, I find myself drinking a LOT of water!!!
Thanks for the update Kathy. Can’t wait to head out and watch!
Happy Friday!
Every Wednesday Hydro Flask® will present to you, our dear readers, some kind of handy survival tip for life in this crazy world of ours.
Tip #1: Do your homework before going on a trip—know the basic geography of your destination and familiarize yourself with edible flora and fauna. Whether you’re hunting for protein-rich grubs or the closest In-N-Out Burger, it helps to have an idea of where those types hang out. Also, be prepared for the environment you’re heading into—bring the right tools and supplies. Did you know that in addition to keeping your post-workout energy drink ice cold, Hydro Flasks® are an excellent place to keep fire tinder and/or matches dry in the wilderness?

Running Dry: A Journey From Source to Sea Down the Colorado River, by Jonathan Waterman (National Geographic, 2010)
The great American river that once carved the Grand Canyon now disappears in a trickle 100 miles from the Pacific Ocean in Mexico, and author Jonathan Waterman set out on a nearly 1,500-mile paddling trip in 2008 to make sure we are aware of why it’s happening.
From the author’s website, www.jonathanwaterman.com:
“Feats of engineering and human ingenuity have made it possible for the Colorado River to irrigate 3.5 million acres of farmland and support 30 million people on arid lands throughout the western U.S. and northern Mexico.
Distant cities, including some of the fastest growing in the nation—L.A., Las Vegas, Phoenix, Denver, and Albuquerque—depend upon its waters and have transformed it into one of the most diverted and litigated rivers in the world. The Colorado now reaches the sea only in the wettest of years and the Delta, once one of the greatest desert estuaries in the world, has been reduced to a veritable wasteland.
Jon’s unprecedented paddling journey down the 1,450 mile Colorado River is detailed in his book, Running Dry, as he deposits his mother’s ashes in the headwaters then investigates the remains of the west’s most iconic waterway.”
Part adventure/travelogue, part serious environmental research, Running Dry aims to change the common perception that everything is okay on the Colorado.
Outdoor Retailer is the tradeshow venue of choice for the outdoor specialty industry, and the Hydro Crew has been in Salt Lake City since Monday spreading the good news that outdoor enthusiasts no longer have to drink non-insulated or BPA-laced beverages.
Apparently, there’s quite the “water bottle war” going on in the Salt Palace, according to Alex Strickland, a freelance writer who’s blogging from the week-long event. After running across nearly 12 different water bottle companies, Strickland writes: “The competition appears to be fierce, and each bottlemaker talked a fair amount of smack about his or her competitors; everything from claiming the others were lying about a lack of harmful BPA plastics to simply disparaging a lack of creativity in the burgeoning bottle scene.”
Whatever the competition might say, Hydro Flasks are guaranteed to be 100% BPA-free, and no one in their right mind would call our arriving-soon 64-ounce Growler unimaginative!
This summer, the Environmental Protection Agency will travel around the country in collaboration with American Water, spreading the word about their WaterSense program and its “We’re for Water” campaign. The traveling information center will stop at national landmarks and teach consumers about WaterSense labeled products, which use about 20% less water than standard models
“Whether by replacing an old, inefficient plumbing fixture with a WaterSense labeled product or adopting more water-efficient behaviors, together we can help save water for future generations,” said Peter Silva, assistant administrator for EPA’s Office of Water. “WaterSense offers consumers simple tips that can help the environment and keep money in their pockets.”
The EPA’s WaterSense program is already having a positive effect on water consumption in the US. According to the EPA’s website, in 2009, the program helped consumers save more than 36 billion gallons of water and $267 million on their water and sewer bills.
Last week, the California State Assembly passed a bill banning BPA from food and drink containers intended for children 3 and younger. The bill was passed by a slim margin (42 – 31 according to saferstates.com) and now will move into the Senate and finally onto the desk of Governor Schwarzenegger.
There are already BPA bans in six states including Vermont, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Maryland and Connecticut, but with a law now pending in New York, and with almost a third of the country living in NY and California, bans in these two states might be the tipping point that causes the industry to create a new plastics solution.
The ban on BPA is extremely expensive for the chemical industry, and after spending 5 million in California in legal fees, (according to the San Fransisco Chronicle) industry leaders may decide the more economical path is simply to come up with a new plastic solution that does not contain BPA.
It is great news to know that while federal organizations like the FDA, the EPA and Congress are waffling on the BPA issue, states are taking it into their own hands, and potentially changing the industry for the whole country.
With the introduction of The Wide Mouth Hydro Flask, a world of possibilities has opened up for the backpacker who would prefer to do some of the cooking at home. Say you plan to only spend one night at your destination – the thought of lugging a stove and various other cooking supplies does not always make sense. Why not prepare a healthy meal before you go, heat it up, and put it in your Wide Mouth Hydro Flask, so it is piping hot and ready to eat right after you set up your tent?
One of the camping classics is rice and beans. This combination makes a complete protein containing all nine of the essential amino acids, which means you can get the same amount of protein as meat, fish, poultry and eggs with half the hassle.
Andrea Chesman wrote a sweet book called, 366 ways Delicious Ways to Cook Rice, Beans, and Grains, assuring that one could go for a year and a day without ever tiring of this age-old combination.

Check out her recipe below for Brown Rice and Lentils, and consider the possibility of cooking this up before your next big hike, adding a little water and storing it in your Wide Mouth Hydro Flask for the afternoon. It would be comforting to know at least the first meal was taken care of.
Brown Rice & Lentils:
(4 – 6 servings)
2 tablespoons of olive oil
1 small, diced onion
4 cloves of garlic, minced
1 finely chopped carrot
2 teaspoons ground cumin
1 teaspoon of ground coriander
1 ¼ cups uncooked brown rice
¾ cup dried brown or green lentils, rinsed
4 cups of water
1 teaspoon of salt
1 scallion, chopped
¼ cup chopped fresh cilantro
In a large skillet, heat the oil over medium-high heat. Add the onion, garlic, carrot, cumin and coriander. Sauté until the onion is limp; about three minutes. Add the rice and lentils and sauté for another two minutes. Add the water and salt, cover and bring to a boil. Then reduce the heat and simmer until the rice and lentils are tender, about 40 minutes. Fluff with a fork. Stir in the scallion and cilantro. Dry the lid, place a paper towel over the rice, replace the lid, and let stand for five minutes before serving.
We recommend adding a cup or two of hot water to this recipe before pouring it into your Hydro Flask to assure that is has more of a soupy consistency.
State agencies in Virginia are once again allowed to buy individual-size bottles of water after a ban, instituted by Gov. Tim Kaine, was reversed by Gov. Bob McDonnell. Virginia’s state spending on bottled water was $158,000 in 2009, and another $129,000 in 2008, according to an article by Paige Winfield Cunningham for the Washington Post.
Bottled water is also ubiquitous on congressional spending reports, with most congressmen spending hundreds of dollars a year on a product they could easily get from the tap. Back to Virginia again: Rep. Randy Forbes spent $626.63, and Rep. Jim Moran spent $524.93, which accounted for 10% of his overall spending on supplies!
As more states and cities work to cut bottled water out of the bottom line for their budgets, it would be great to know that we have elected law makers who are conscious enough to drink from the tap.
Maybe we should send them a Hydroflask?
The Story Behind Our Obsession with Bottled Water
Internationally recognized water expert Peter Gleick just published at book last month called Bottled and Sold which is an in depth look the bottled water problem. Gleick conducted a substantial amount of research for this book including interviews and plant visits and he uses these insights to examine how water is found, pumped, treated, bottled and sold to the public that simply expects a container of cool, clean water.
But bottled water is far from simple.
Gleick does not stop his examination with pointing out the problems associated with this widespread phenomenon; he offers contemporary solutions by making a sound case for improving the public’s attitude towards safe, piped-in drinking water, purified by the natural cycle and consumed with reusable containers (like Hydroflasks ! )
In Bottled and Sold, Gleick traces the history of the bottled water industry – how water went from being a public, natural resource to one of the most commercially successful products of the century.
If you don’t have time to read the book, let these statistics speak for themselves:
-Every second of the day in the U.S., a thousand people buy a plastic bottle of water, and every second, a thousand more people throw these bottles away.
-There have been over 100 bottled water recalls in the U.S. – very few receiving any kind of public attention.
-It takes 17 million barrels of oil to produce the amount of plastic bottles consumed in the U.S. each year.
You can order Peter Gleick’s book here and most public libraries should have a few copies.

Tumalo Falls is a popular summer destination in Bend, Oregon.
Our Hydroflask headquarters are in Bend, Oregon and almost everyone that lives in town is celebrating the long awaited arrival of… SUMMER. It was a drawn-out, grey winter and an even longer, greyer spring, and now that the sun is out there is a tangible excitement and happiness in the air. Outdoor cafes are packed, everyone is out walking their dog at all hours and bikes are everywhere!

Flame throwers at last year's Summer Festival
Part of celebrating summer here in Bend is a slew of inspiring music and craft festivals that happen all over town, sometimes during the same days and times. The Bank of the Cascades Bend Summer Festival is one of the more anticipated of these events, drawing artists, street performers and musicians from all over the country.
One of the most notable acts performing for the festival is The Samples, headlining the Clear 101.7 stage this year. Mosley Wotta, recent winner of Central Oregon’s Last Band Standing competition heads up the local’s stage and the Jazz Stage features Todd Haaby and Sola Via.
There is even a special area for kids (and parents!) to cool off and have some fun playing water games, dancing on inflatables and creating arts and crafts.
If you are in Bend, Oregon this weekend, be sure to check out this event put on by C3. If you are not in town, this is definitely one of those festivals worth planning a vacation around. I’m sure your Hydroflask is looking for an adventure that combines cultural appreciation with outdoor activities!
TapIt is an organization that was founded in New York City in 2008 to form a water bottle refilling network for people on the go. Instead of stopping into the store to buy a plastic bottle filled with water, New Yorkers are instead encouraged to carry reusable bottles where ever they go. (They would look so chic with a Hydroflask, methinks!) The café owners sign up as partners to provide free tap water. They have developed a sophisticated search and mapping feature for computers and smart phone, and they even have a “TapIt Water” iPhone App to locate participating cafes.
TapIt is looking to take its vision across the U.S. and it always looking to partner with people looking to start a local water movement in their own towns. They support finding new and sustainable solutions for the 21st century. Check out their website and blog for more information.
It seems we could easily make this happen in Bend, OR, where most residents are conscious of how precious our water is; that almost all water we consume comes directly from the Deschutes River, and that this river is noticeably smaller as it leaves down.
Anyone interested in helping me get something like this started, drop me a line a laurel@hydroflask.com.
Pictured above: the Deschutes River courtesy of the Daily Green.
Hydration bottles, OK, water bottles are not created equal. To excel in the crowded field, the product has to be better than others. HydroFlaskis better, proven in my tests, and may be just what you’re looking for. These are great products finds!
Bottles that hold water are plentiful. Bottles that won’t leak are fewer among the mix. Still fewer are those that keep hot liquids hot and cold liquids cold for extended periods. The latter group is where HydroFlask shines. There is another category including those vessels that are also rugged, nearly indestructible. HydroFlask is rugged, though not indestructible, but practicallyindestructible. I suppose if I was to throw it, jump on it, or try to mangle it, I could do this. I’ve not dropped it and plan to be careful so it does not drop in the future. So, other than this kind of abusive treatment, this product should last a lifetime!
The model I have, the 24-ounce HydroFlask, is shown below, but with a flip-top cover sport sipping tip not shown on their Website.

BPA-free (that’s nasty stuff in some plastics that has fallen from favor and may be proven to have detrimental health effects), these double-walled insulated 18/8 stainless steel (18% chromium and 8% nickel, a perfectly fine grade of stainless steel) HydroSteel bottles have other benefits not immediately apparent. If you’ve seen other stainless steel bottles or experienced them, you know that they “sweat” when filled with ice-cold water. You know the surface becomes cold, too. So, too, does the surface become hot to the touch when conventional stainless steel bottles are filled with hot liquid. As these bottles have properties similar to those industrial-looking old-school vacuum bottles, they do not suffer from sweating or uncomfortable temps.
So, the functional benefits are simple. There are none of the undesirable external “symptoms” of what’s inside. By my tests, hot liquids stayed hot for 12 hours and ice cold liquid (with ice) stayed cold for 24 hours.
Now, it is up to you to decide if this form factor is what you want. Choose from a sports cap or loop cap that screws in and out to reveal the contents. Select from 18-ounce or 24-ounce capacities in red and silver in the look like mine above. Both will fit in conventional cup holders.
New to the line are 21-ounce and 18-ounce Wide Mouth models, shown below.
If you’ve ever used a Thermos or Aladdin vacuum bottle, you’re already familiar with the main draw, the properties of HydroFlask. The double-wall construction of these products is the key to maintaining hot and cold for extended periods. Aladdin, Thermos and other old-school bottles contain a double-wall glass liner surrounded by and suspended within a metal outer shell that provides support and some protection from breakage due to roughness. However, they’re rather large in overall size and not convenient for use by today’s mobile society. They are primarily for users wishing to take along a quantity of hot coffee or soup to the workplace, where the bottle will remain stationary.
Contrast this with today’s on-the-go users who carry their bottles in hand, on bicycles and in holders in their vehicles.
My experience with HydroFlask has been outstanding. In HOT weather, the bottle’s contents stay ice cold, WITH ice intact for up to 24 hours. It just flat works, with no sweating. I am one very satisfied HydroFlask fan! Get one or more, give one or more and join the club. They are warranted for life, too, against manufacturer’s defects. Congrats to Clif Bar and Odwalla Bar for coming up with a great solution to the problem of non-recyclable energy bar wrappers. There is now an alternative to “throwing away” these wrappers and contributing waste to our landfills: Sign up here and TerraCycle will ship a couple of postage-paid envelopes to your door. All you have to do is fill them and pop them in the mailbox. To sweeten the deal, 2 cents will be donated to the non-prof or charity of your choice.
And look at the pretty things your trash will become.
In February of this year, U.S. District Court Judge James Redden of Portland, Oregon requested yet another revision to the Obamas administration’s Bush-era plan to protect salmon in the Northwest. The revised plan was submitted May 20 and contains only a few relatively minor changes that are unlikely to be approved by Judge Redden.

Currently the State of Oregon, salmon advocates and the Nez Perce tribe are suing the federal government because they claim that this salmon protection plan is not doing enough to protect the fish from the harmful effects of the dams throughout the Northwest.
Moderate opponents to the plan insist that these fish need higher flows on the Columbia to survive, and salmon advocates argue the four federal dams on the lower Snake River must be removed altogether if salmon are to survive.
Here is a great quote from John Kitzhaber, former Governor of Oregon, who is currently running for a third term about the situation: (Special thanks to Patagonia’s blog, The Cleanest Line for publishing this first:
“What is at stake here goes far beyond the issue of salmon recovery. To me, it raises the question of whether we have the courage and the will to reconcile the growing contradiction between the world we say we want to leave our children and the one we are actually creating through the decisions we make today. And it calls into question our capacity to take explicit and intentional action to shape our own future rather than to simply react to circumstances, allowing by default our future to become a matter of chance. It’s time to fight for salmon. It’s time to fight for us. It’s time to fight for our future.”
Momentum is building for the proposed U.S. Bicycle Route System, a national network of bicycle routes throughout the United States. The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) has approved a National Corridor Plan, which would make this the largest official bike route system in the world. The proposed corridor would cover over 50,000 miles. In comparison, Europe’s planned “Euro-Velo” covers about 36,000 miles.

This plan has been in development stages for more than five years with contributions from federal and state transportation agencies, non-profits, federal and state officials and bicycling advocacy groups.
Some organizations such as Adventure Cycling, the largest membership cycling group in North America, have been particularly pro-active in helping to develop the plan by providing staff support and fundraising.
The development of a major bicycle route system in the U.S. follows the path of many regions that have created similar networks to increase tourism and recreation opportunities. Some of the most notable include the UK’s 12,000 mile National Cycle Network, and Quebec’s 2,400 mile La Route Verte (the “Green Way”.)
Imagine surfing down the gushing whitewater runoff from the Cascade Mountains, past twisting ponderosa pines and volcanic rock outcroppings. Cool water splashes around the boat and invigorates the body and spirit on a sunny high desert day.

Whether you are planning a trip to Central Oregon or have lived here your whole life, put whitewater rafting on the list of must-do activities this summer: There are few adventures that are more enjoyable to do as a group than a trip down the river.
One of Bend Oregon’s best-known outfitters is Sun Country Tours. They offer shorter adventures like the Big Eddy Thriller, which runs down an exciting 3-mile stretch of the Deschutes, and they also offer full day excursions from Maupin. Sun Country Tours sells Hydroflasks at their main office, so be sure to pick one out to take with you on your rafting adventure. Attach your bottle to the raft using a carabineer and it will stay put even on the most tumultuous white water.
If you are looking for multi-day trips with one of Oregon’s most renowned guide companies, check out Ouzel Outfitters selection of adventures throughout the state. They provide all your camping gear plus gourmet meals served on banquet tables.
The search is over! Beach volleyball players of Bend have finally secured a location for public courts near the river. Truckloads of sand from the Oregon coast have been arriving daily to the new courts in the Old Mill, near where the National Cyclocross Championship races took place late last year.

Photo by Jill Rosell Photography jillrosellphotography.com
With sponsorships from Hydroflask and other local companies and a donation from the Bend Volleyball Association, excavation for this top quality facility has begun, but because beach sand is so expensive ($10,000!), fundraising efforts continue. Volunteers are needed for backhoe work, bobcat work and any prize gifts that can be donated to raffle off.
If you live in Bend and would like to support the volleyball players, sign up for the Poker Tournament Fundraiser at Rivals Sports Bar on Saturday, June 5, 2010 at 6 p.m.
Jean Hill, and 82-year old activist, lobbied the historic Boston suburb of Concord, Massachusettes into action. Residents banned the sale of all bottled water, which will officially take effect next January, making it the first town in the country to become completely bottled water free. Bundanoon, Australia was the first city in the world to do so.
“All these discarded bottles are damaging our planet, causing clumps of garbage in the oceans that hurt fish, and are creating more pollution on our streets,” Hill said.
Annually, Americans consume 8.6 billion gallons of bottled water, according to Treehugger.com, and 40% of this water comes straight out of a tap. Although, the argument is often used that bottled water is a safe way to stay hydrated in times of emergencies, a study by the Natural Resources Defense Council found that water stored in plastic bottles for more than a few months show signs of phthalate-leaching, a chemical that blocks testosterone and other hormones.
Congratulations to residents of Concord, MA and to the efforts of Jean Hill! We know the world’s greatest water bottle is soon to become a best seller in this progressive city. Now its time to make something like this happen in Bend, Oregon…
When I first read about Stand-Up Paddleboarding, my immediate reaction was that it looked a little boring and just seemed like one more sport to add to the ever-expanding pallet of recreational options.
After trying it up at Elk Lake Resort this past summer, I was totally sold. There is something amazing about being on top of the water (religious references aside!). It is also a great “core” workout because of the muscles used for balancing and using arm strength at the same time. No wonder it is the fastest growing water sport in the U.S.
If you live in Bend, flat sections of the Deschutes and Mirror Pond are the perfect location for an evening workout in the summer months. Stop by Tumalo Creek Kayak & Canoe and rent a board for the afternoon to see how you like it. If you want to get serious, Tumalo Creek is hosting a Stand-Up Paddleboarding race series every Wednesday in July and August this summer, sponsored by Naish Pacific Boardsports. The winners will have the opportunity to compete at the championships in California.
Tumalo Creek has a new line of orange and turquoise Hydroflasks to go with their new logo with laser artwork by Tom Dean. We think you should try balancing these bottles on the end of your board… might be more practical than having your dog on there…
To say Bend, Oregon is an outdoorsy, athletic town often feels like an understatement. Even on cold and windy days, cyclists chug up the Cascade Lakes Hwy to Mt. Bachelor, and runners usually out number walkers on most of the urban trails.
Bend’s pinnacle event of athletic fanaticism is the Pole Pedal Paddle. With six legs including downhill skiing, cross-country skiing, road biking, running, kayaking and a final sprint to the finish, the race is quintessential Bend, both because of the crazy shape athletes must be in to finish the course, and because Bend is one of the only places in the country where you could feasibly do all these activities on the same day.
The PPP is now in its 34th year and over 3,000 racers are registered to compete. It is the primary fundraiser for the Mount Bachelor Sports Education Foundation and raised over $140,000 for the organization in 2008.
Whether your “in it to win it” or just looking forward to the after party, come say hi to your friends at Hydroflask at the PPP festival, May 15 at the Les Schwab Amphitheatre. We’ll be sharing a tent with Mountain Supply and offering 20% off our bottles on race day. With a deal like that, everyone’s a winner ; )
A long day on the river or out on the trail warrants a crisp, cool glass of wine. I discovered today that a bottle of wine fits absolutely perfectly in my tall Hydroflask, so you can bet that I’ll keep my priorities straight when packing for my next camping trip.
Decisions, decisions…
Do I take the Sokol Blosser Evolution which features nine varieties of grapes creating a “parade of flavors across the palate,” or the über-local Maragas Pinot Riche, a German style white with hints of honey suckle, pineapple and peach? Maybe both… and add another Hydroflask to my pack list.

Exploring the wines of Oregon can be an endlessly enjoyable task, but I’m especially fond of the vintners who have become leaders in the sustainability movement. Sokol Blosser, for instance was the first winery in the country to receive country to receive Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification from the United States Green Building Council. They are also certified organic by Oregon Tilth, run their tractors on 50 percent biodiesel and use solar energy to power the winery. Next time your out on a wine tour, be sure to check out the living roof (pictured below), a wildflower garden that covers their underground barrel cellar.
A little closer to home, Maragas Winery has been making great strides in recent years to grow grapes in an environmentally conscious way. Over 75% of their energy comes from solar panels they have on property. They recently made the switch to an eco wine bottle, which uses less glass, saving on both waste and shipping, and they no longer use capsules (the foil surrounding the cork) because of the toxic chemicals the foils release when they are recycled. Their grapes are grown entirely organic, and they will become certified within a couple of years.
Whichever wine you decide to keep cold with your Hydroflask (I still say bring both), consider your eco-conscience when wine buying: think of local wines first, and look for labels like “Salmon-Safe” and certified organic. The fishys will thank you.
Last month at Coca-Cola’s annual shareholders’ meeting, a number of concerned investors voted on a resolution that urged Coke to go public about their use of BPA in the linings of their aluminum cans. Coke responded that they did not think this was information that their shareholders (and consumers!) should know.
In addition to not telling the truth about their products, they are also working with some of their competitors as well as representatives from the chemical industry to stop state-wide bans on BPA, like the one that recently passed in Maryland.
In association with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and Health Canada, Klean Kanteen Inc. just announced a voluntary recall of over a million water bottle spouts, also known as the Sport Cap 2.0. On numerous occasions, the spouts have broken in children’s mouths while they were drinking.

If you own one of these bottles send it back immediately! www.kleankanteen.com/safetynotice
Hydroflask will be announcing our new line of bottles just for kids very shortly ; )
If a pictures speaks a thousand words, then maybe a video speaks a million? Here is a collection of videos ranging from goofy funny to heart-wrenching about plastic pollution in our oceans and how it is affecting marine wildlife.
Kid’s rap video about plastic bags:
Rise Above Plastic by the Surfrider Foundation:
Maui singer songwriter Micah Wolf collaborates with the Algalita Marine Research Foundation and photographer Ben Moon (formerly of Bend!) to produce a video for his song that raises awareness about plastic pollution in the oceans. Here it is featured on Patagonia’s blog, the Cleanest Line:
Emotionally powerful video about the Great Eastern Garbage Patch:
Bikram Yoga was first popularized in the early 1970s by Bikram Choudhury, founder of the worldwide Yoga College of India. The beginning class is 90 minutes long, and features 26 postures, with two breathing exercises. With room temperatures of 105 degrees and an ideal humidity level of 40%, students sweat continually throughout class and will crave cool, clean water to aid in the process of detoxification.

A beautiful shot of Standing Bow Pulling from Ashley Cowden's Blog, A Whole-istic Perspective
While any plastic or aluminum water bottle will do the trick to provide some needed hydration between postures, I brought my Hydro Flask last week to my Bikram classes at the beautiful studio that over looks the Deschutes River here in Bend, OR. This studio has a reputation for being particularly hard-core and sometimes the temperatures go above 105 degrees. The water in my Hydro Flask stayed chilled the whole time, and at the end of one particularly grueling class, I poured the water over my head!
One of the primary reasons I go to Bikram at least three times a week is for the detoxification and purification benefits. Blood circulation is increased during class and bacteria and toxins are released and flushed out of the body. Fresh blood circulates into areas that have been at first compressed and then extended when the posture is complete.
It is a relief to know that I’m not counteracting all the work to detoxify my body by sipping warm water out of a plastic *heated* sports bottle. (After all, isn’t it hot water that releases BPA!?) Thanks Hydro Flask!
In the summer of 1997, Captain Charles Moore and the crew of the Alguita (a fifty-foot aluminum-hulled catamaran) sailed through an area that scientists now refer to as the “Eastern Garbage Patch,” a swirling vortex of floating trash in the North Pacific twice the size of Texas.
Moore has since made it his life’s mission to raise awareness about plastic debris and pollution in the ocean. He first founded the Algalita Marine Research Foundation to study the effects of pollution on marine life. In 2008, the foundation organized the JUNK raft project. A raft was built from parts of an old Cessna and pontoons filled with 15,000 old plastic bottles. The raft soon set sail across the Pacific Ocean to bring attention to all the trash trapped in the North Pacific Gyre.

Algalita Foundation's JUNK raft crosses the Pacific Ocean to raise awareness about plastic pollution
This area of the sea contains six times as much plastic as plankton. Some plastic pieces are so miniscule they are barely detectable to the human eye. The most frightening thing about this discovery is that as plastic becomes smaller and more widespread, it has a greater chance of ending up inside our bodies, where it has the potential to disrupt gene activity.
Be a part of the plastic solution by reaching for your Hydro Flask before reaching for plastic bottled water. Your body, and the earth, will thank you.
Spring is on the way! And I, for one, can’t imagine myself not taking advantage of the time between now and summer to get myself in shape!
And, thanks to my Hydro Flask I can keep myself hydrated as I push my new limits!
Proper hydration levels are the most basic and important aspect of any fitness aspiration. Whether you are smacking golf balls at the local driving range or running an ULTRAmarathon , hydration takes priority over the rest of the important fitness necessities.
Hydro Flask is made from 100% recyclable materials. Non-porous, food grade stainless steel will last forever! Hydro Flask is a sustainable product. No, it does not grow on trees like say, bamboo, but it can carry the ultimate renewable resource; and the life-blood of our existence: water!
Speaking of bamboo as a natural, sustainable resource, last week I notices a hiker surveying a vista at a pike in the trail. He was sporting some stylin’ bamboo “trekkingpoles”. He was out putting his Spring fitness regime in gear. I noticed a slightly distinctive, bottle-shaped item in his fanny pack so I asked if it happen to be a Hydro Flask like the one I had strapped to my pack. He responded with an animated “YEAH MAN, THESE THINGS ARE KILLER!”. He, like many Flask-Fans, recognize the importance of lightweight, durable gear in any situation. Hence the strong, lightweight bamboo poles along with the ultralight, sleek Hydro Flask he was toting! We conversed for a while, during which I mentioned that Hydro Flask has a 100 year warranty! He was stoked! So we each grabbed our Flasks, toasted to a solid 100+ more years of solid fitness, and then hi-five’d before continuing along down the trail towards our own fitness goals!
So keep toasting to the arrival of another beautiful summer, and hydrate your life in the process! Hi-five to hydration! Hi-five to Hydro Flask!
This summer, Team Farsight will attempt the monstrous Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) thru-hike…and Hydro Flask is proud to help support their effort. Lead by team leader Trevor Thomas, Team Farsight’s mission is, “To challenge ourselves mentally, physically, and emotionally while at the same time raising public awareness and societal expectations for the blind and empowering the blind population to achieve greater heights.”
As if hiking 2650 miles wasn’t enough, it should be noted that Trevor lost his sight at age 35 from a rare eye disease. In trying to be an inspirational leader to others with handicaps, Trevor has tried to turn his disability into something positive for himself, as well as others. He has already bagged the Appalachian Trail, the east coast version of the PCT. He will be leading a team of four in attempting a feat that fewer people have accomplished than climbing Mt. Everest.
“I was blown away when I first heard about these guys” says Hydro Flask co-founder Travis Rosbach. “To accomplish everything they have and to be blind, it really puts into perspective how miniscule our daily “problems” are. If they can get through all they do in the environment that they thrive in- I guess my work day is pretty easy. When I first talked to Trevor I was really impressed at how real of person he is. You wouldn’t know from talking to him that he is at any disadvantage. And I knew we needed to help in any way we could. I really feel privileged to have Hydro Flask play a role in this. I just hope they like the bottles!”

Our good friends over at Betacup have launched a really neat collaboration initiative to reduce the paper cup consumption that is plaguing our world.
The contest is taking place on the Betacup’s partner platform jovoto.com, and anyone can submit their ideas on how to reduce paper cup consumption and promote adoption of environmentally-friendly alternatives. Ideas are open to the public for discussion, community members and jurors are providing feedback, allowing collaborators to refine and update their submissions through June 15, when the contest comes to a close.
Starbucks has provided $20,000 in cash prizes to be awarded for the most innovative ideas. The participant who submits the best idea (determined by an expert panel) will receive a $10,000 cash prize! In addition, participants whose ideas are among the top five selected by the community of collaborators will each be awarded a $2,000 cash prize.
Not bad for the environment, and not bad for the lucky winners! Please help this great cause take off and maybe share the winnings with us when your terrific Hydro Flask idea wins…maybe…?
Our good friends over at Deschutes Brewery received their custom engraved Hydro Flask’s this week just in time for Spring Break. The new 2010 bottles are available in both the 18 oz and 24 oz sizes in a number of colors.
“They look really-really nice!” says Hydro Flask enthusiest and Deschutes Brewery frequenter Jeff Klein. “The hardest part of buying a Hydro Flask has always been which color to buy, now I have to figure out which micro brew I want to drink out of it? There’s sure to be a lot of coin flipping going on this week. and some beer drinking thrown in there I’m sure!”

Bouldering is a popular variety of rock climbing, and North County is the home of one of the finest bouldering sites in the state. A prominent ridge studded with thousands of huge boulders, Mt. Woodson is northeast of Poway off California 67.
Parking is on the shoulder of 67, and climbers walk a quarter mile or so on Mt. Woodson Road to get to the boulders, which cover the entire point. “It’s like someone spilled a bag of giant marbles,” said Brian McInerny, a longtime climber who first started climbing there in 1972.
Climbers first come across two relatively small practice boulders, which are but 8 or 10 feet high. Climbers can warm up on the smaller boulders or practice certain techniques that they will need when they tackle the larger ones, which rise out of the ground like towers, many more than 30 feet tall.
Two of the largest, most popular boulders are known, in fact, as Tower No. 1 and Tower No. 2, and others have names like Mother Superior, the Cave, Ogre and Marshmallow Tower.
There is even a pocket handbook called Mt. Woodson Bouldering, which has locations, difficulty ratings and descriptions of most of the routes that climbers attempt on each of the boulders.
The routes are usually barely noticeable, with only the remnants of chalk dust, or some fixed bolts for the climbers to tie into to mark them. Routes may be based on the smallest of cracks, or the scantiest of footholds.
“Mt. Woodson is a Mecca for all Southern California climbers,” said Tim Johnson, a Navy flight officer who lives in Ramona. “It has every type of crack climbing and face climbing. It ranges from easy problems to the most difficult you can imagine.”
On larger rocks, where there’s a chance of a fall, climbers employ a technique called belaying, using ropes and carabiners (metal loops) to anchor themselves against a fall.
“You can always challenge yourself at Mt. Woodson,” said McInerny. “There will always be something harder to do.”
Mt. Woodson Is a Top Spot for Bouldering

As you may have heard, on the evening of February 25th an anonymous friend of Hydro Flask came forward to help us with our Haiti Relief efforts. The challenge was to gain as much show of support as possible through Facebook and Twitter. Simply put, $5 would be donated to UNICEF for every new friend and follower Hydro Flask received on those two sites, and we had just one week to do so.
For the previous three weeks, we were full steam into our version of an in-depth relief partnership. Hydro Flask allocated bottles of which 100% of the sales would go directly to Haiti via UNICEF. For each bottle sold, the Company donates a new bottle which will be delivered to the UNICEF relief station on the Dominican border.
From the start there was a wonderful show of support from local businesses, friends/family, and communities across the region and online. Combined Communications donated a hefty amount of radio ads, Minuteman Press printed posters, Carlson Signs made banners, Bend Awards engraved Haiti Relief bottles and local retailers like Whole Foods, Newport Market, Natures and Mountain Supply sold the bottles for 100% donation.
The final count came in and the numbers were pretty decent- The online communities raise $840 and the Bend, Oregon efforts raised $1895 for a total of $2735.00, and we didn’t even get Neil Young involved, although we would have if he was available.
On behalf of everyone who helped whether showing online support or donating time and resourced here in Bend, the entire team at Hydro Flask THANKS YOU for helping help those who are unable to help themselves.
Way to go everyone!!!
The tongue droops extra low. The extra rapid panting that sounds like a bicycle pump on overdrive. The drool. The fast-beating heart. Fido is thirsty!
And it’s a good thing that Hydro Flask is there for your loyal friend! Also, your dog knows what to expect: a cool, toxin free slurp of the good stuff!
The only problem may be that your dog might feel a little threatened by your constant use of your Hydro Flask. Fido might think that you have a new best friend! Seeing you take your Hydro Flask everywhere, seeing you quench your thirst on the regular, just might make Fido a little jealous.
Until you poor a little H2 o’ water into a concave, bowl-like rock, of course. Then Fido will welcome the Hydro Flask into any doggie adventure! In fact, Fido will insist you bring the new buddy on every walk, hike, or run! It’s the ultimate compliment to your tried-and-true buddy system! Let’s face it; Fido knows that the more water you have at hand, the longer the jaunt will be! And what kind of Fido would Fido be if Fido didn’t want to be on a perpetual jaunt?
Dog: our best friend. Us: dog’s best friend. Water: earth’s best friend. Hydro Flask: Best friend to human and dog alike.
Hydrate your life! And Fido’s too!

Maryland’s Senate followed in the footsteps of its House Thursday, passing legislation to ban bisphenol A from baby bottles and sippy cups. Maryland governor Martin O’Malley has yet to review the legislation, but sources close to him say he won’t have any objections. Let’s just hope he doesn’t hold a secret meeting with lobbyists for the chemical industry, and then decide to block the bill. Upon passing, Maryland would become the fourth state to ban BPA.
Here’s an idea. Instead of waiting for the government to do the right thing, why don’t we just cut BPA out of our life? Hydro Flask’s double-walled, insulated water bottles keep the hot drinks hot, and the cold drinks cold. And, of course, they are 100% BPA free! When you’re drinking from a Hydro Flask bottle, you don’t have to worry if the government’s got your back. For more information on BPA-as well as other interesting facts and stats, check out our BPA page Water is necessary, a chemical laden water bottle isn’t.
One of my favorite ideas for a greener lifestyle concerns trash. In my days as a Central Oregon builder, I visited the Knott Landfill on more than one occasion. While our dump is afforded with some of the best mountain views in town, the trip itself was never one I looked forward to. My problem is I always think about how big the landfill will be in a month, year, or ten years. We are a nation with a ton of stuff! And with that ownership of a ton of stuff, comes with the burden of getting rid of that stuff when we don’t want it anymore.
There are two easy things we can do to help slow down the growth rate of our landfills, while lessening our impact on the earth. The first thing is a correct answer to a simple question we get asked everyday, “Paper or plastic?” Just remember the alternative answers; “Neither,” “No, I don’t need a bag for my two items,” and, “No, thanks, I brought my own.” After all, you went to the market for groceries, not another paper or plastic bag to be folded and discarded to the bottom of your pantry, only to be thrown out after years of non-use. BYOBag! It’s better for you and better for me.
The other simple step to lightening our load comes in the form of your personal water bottle. Your personal water bottle eliminates the need for the other 11 plastic bottles worth of water we should be drinking each day. While you’re at it, instead of a plastic, BPA-containing water bottle, why not make it a stainless steel bottle. And, if you’re going to go stainless, make it a Hydro Flask bottle. Hydro Flask’s double-wall, insulated design ensures your hot drinks stay hot, and your cold drinks stay cold, without the annoying water bottle sweat. And, of course, it’s 100% recyclable! BYOBottle!
Don’t forget to stop by www.fivepercentback.org to see Hydro Flask’s commitment to making this a better world. While your there, feel free to direct 5% of the proceeds to a charity of your choice.
“Ah, how do you sleep?
Ah, how do you sleep at night?”
-John Lennon
Mr. Lennon brings up a good point! How do you sleep? If you’re not getting the sleep you require, and your sleep-debt is compounding nightly, then Hydro Flask would like to serve up a rejoicing remedy!
We recommend taking advantage of the Zen-nap!
Many forms of the Zen-nap have been used throughout history. In fact, the word itself originated in the 1300’s from the Old High German hnaffezen, which means “to doze” according to the Online Etymology Dictionary. My guess is the mini-snooze was practiced long before the word appeared in any dictionary. But if you have to look up the word in order to understand it’s utility, than it might be best if you simply read the entire dictionary. That might actually help you to catch some real zzzz’s!
In Latin America, a popular variation of the nap is called “la siesta”. It is a daily ritual practiced after a sizable lunch occurring between morning and afternoon work hours! Whoever thought of that should be honored with a large monument of a sawed-log or something!
In any case, the advantages of “the nap” have been debated for centuries. But we don’t think there is anything bad to say about it! Some scientists might attempt to say that taking a power-nap during the day bumps that amount of time into your night-time beauty-rest totals, making it more difficult to get that recommended “8 hours” we constantly hear about.

We blog to differ!
Much like swigging down an ice-cold or piping-hot beverage from your Hydro Flask, a quick or extended Zen nap will noticeably increase your alertness, energy, and cumulative productivity throughout your entire day! Similar to testimonials relating the many benefits of the Zen Nap, our ever-growing band of Flask-fans are routinely raving about their decreased levels of stress and anxiety, increased mental capacity, memory, and overall health in general!
So top-off that bottle and take a Zen nap. Dream of all the beautiful places you’ll take your Hydro Flask. Dream of how clean, clear, and deliciously complete you, and your beverage of choice, will be once you’ve awakened! Now get out there! And don’t forget your Hydro Flask!
Here at Hydro Flask, we strongly believe in “treading lightly”. Our environment is our everything, and we wouldn’t mind if it stuck around for a while! With that said, we also believe it is an important aspect of human nature to “leave our mark.” Now, I don’t mean “leaving a mark” in the sense that a vandal might leave a mark. Instead, we as human beings, naturally want to leave our mark in a positive manner! And fortunately for all human beings,Hydro Flask compliments both of these virtues! You can make your mark and still tread lightly!
In addition to being in-tune with human nature while becoming a key gear-item in the quiver, the Hydro Flask naturally heightens our subconscious awareness of hydration-levels*!
We at Hydro Flask believe that we are “making our mark” in the industry by offering double-wall insulated, BPA free, stainless steel bottles that you will be thirsty to use! And isn’t it nice that we don’t object to you making your mark on our bottles? In fact it is encouraged! So go ahead and stick one of your favorite stickers on it, send us the pic, and we’ll post it on our Flickr site!!
I remember the “leave a mark” concept quite well. It was one that sent me on a deep pondering about the nature of the human spirit. It was taught to me that when we see a fresh blanket of snow, we naturally want to walk in it. Or that when the water from a wave recedes back into the ocean, we naturally want to go make our sand-tracks in its wet trail.
There is a fine balance between “treading lightly” and “making your mark”. This a balance that Hydro Flask espouses! This is a balance we encourage! So refill your bottle and go make your mark! And remember to tread lightly like we do!
*not a scientifically proven fact….yet!
As if we needed further proof the government might not have our best interests at hand, the Environmental Protection Agency has left BPA off the list of chemicals needing additional regulation. This suspicious turn of events followed a December 22nd meeting between chemical industry lobbyists and Obama administration officials.
Even though BPA, which has been linked to health problems in humans and animals, has been detected in the urine of 93% of Americans tested, the EPA has allowed the American Chemistry Council to lobby on behalf of profits and against American well-being. The multimillion-dollar PR and lobbying campaign by the chemical industry effectively clouded the judgment of our government while hiding behind studies paid for by the industry.
Thankfully, there are a few companies that actually care what their customers put into their bodies. Hydro Flask’s double-walled, stainless steel bottles are 100% BPA free, and proud to be! The 100% recyclable bottles allow the user to taste the liquids as they were meant to be, without the thought of what it may be doing to their body.
And if that wasn’t enough, Hydro Flask is currently in the midst of a Haiti Relief program aimed at supplying the people of Haiti with much-needed funds and water bottles. And if further proof is needed, go to www.fivepercentback.org for more information on what Hydro Flask and other socially responsible companies are doing to help make this a better world.
Ralph Waldo Emerson expresses, through his art, the same concept when he wrote his famous quote: “Thought is the blossom; language the bud; action the fruit behind it.”

What’s your favorite winter event in the Olympics and why? Maybe it’s the Lycra clad, rifle toting ladies in the Women’s Biathlon that send your heart-rate monitor into panic mode. Or maybe it’s the dizzying grace and beauty of the impressive Men’s Figure Skating that melts your ice. Could it be that the Super-G conjures up your inner speed demon to an extreme known only by fellow adrenaline junkies atop that double black-diamond?
Well, whatever it may be, we each have our favorite.
With so many contests of human style, speed, athleticism, grace, and power being featured in this winter’s Olympic Games, the “best” event is always a matter of personal opinion. So, whether you favor the Curling contest, with their brushes and brooms, or the Ski-jump, with their long, plank-like ski’s, we all have a favorite, even if we can’t commit to just one.
There are as many reasons that we take interest in these athletic events as there are spectators. Imagination, dedication, and our instinctual thirst to learn from the masters at their finest provoke these undying inspirations.
Imagining ourselves competing at this level is an inspiration in itself!
Tell us about your favorite winter Olympic event and why you think you like it so much. The best one might even win a trucker hat… And, go athletes!
We hope that those competing in this winter’s contests inspire us all to grab our Hydro Flask’s and get outside to enjoy the gift of health and athletic endeavor!

Hoodoo_Hydro_FlaskWe know that outdoor participation has been on the rise during the last few years which, in my opinion, is one the many terrific side effects of the ‘great recession.’ Coupled with the harmonious timing of environmental initiatives moving to the forefront, we see that people are redefining their priorities. We are, en masse, steering our lives into a more healthy, organic and sustainable direction. Families are spending more time together outdoors, enjoying parks and camping while buying fewer frivolities for their children. Organic dining is becoming common fare on restaurant menus and we see an increase in organic food stores and private gardens creeping up. The distinctive ‘geo-traveler’ has upped the ante in sustainable vacation destinations investing their hard earned dollars in quality merchandise created by like-minded sustainable and community outreach companies.
And with the pursuit for life’s organic balance comes new statistics that show people who earn less money are happier. For those of you working 70 hours per week to earn that $80-100K + paycheck, here’s a tidbit for you. Psychologist and Nobel Laureate Daniel Kahneman says millions of dollars won’t buy you happiness, but a job that pays $60,000 a year might help. Happiness levels increase up to the $60K mark, but “above that it’s a flat line,” he said.
Spending time with people we like and doing the things that bring us joy was often forgotten or a secondary requisite in place of our need to make money. We were pushed to mindlessly consume with an ease to do it and a social acceptability of living beyond our means.
I hope you too are enjoying the mass shift in thought and attention to what is right for us as individuals and families- through conservation, smarter consumption and increased outdoor participation. We can delight as we unite in the observation that the ‘great recession’ has helped to steer us to organic roots, literally.

Money can’t buy happiness, but neither can poverty.
We all know how saturated our communities are with initiatives to raise money for the earthquake victims in Haiti. It’s been a wonderful experience to be part of communities banding together for the sake of a united goal. And while attentions may be dwindling and wallets closing as we turn inward towards our own socioeconomic wellbeing, we need your help in the final two weeks of our campaign for Haiti. We’re not asking for a hand out…
Here’s what we’re doing.
We have allocated 5000 bottles of which 100% of the proceeds will go directly to Haiti via UNICEF. We, Hydro Flask, will match every bottle sold and hand-deliver them to the UNICEF Haiti relief center on the Dominican border in early March. If you already have a Hydro Flask, make it a set and get your limited edition Haiti Relief Hydro Flask right now. They’re $25 and $30 bucks, they last a hundred years and each bottle you buy will put a reusable Hydro Flask bottle containing clean drinking water in the hands of a displaced or orphaned Haitian child.

BPA affects male rat fertility for generations.
New research suggests that exposure to bisphenol A (BPA) during gestation and lactation lowers male fertility in adulthood and that the effect may persist for at least three generations. The rat study tested relatively low levels of BPA chosen to fall within the range of human exposures. This study is the first to indicate that BPA might have transgenerational effects on male reproductive health. Numerous prior studies using laboratory animals have found that exposure to BPA during development can compromise female fertility.Click HERE for Synopsis by Wendy Hessler and Heather Patisaul, Ph.D.
What’s in your body? A number of chemicals are becoming more worrisome.
Even as the chemical industry and manufacturers tell us we are safe, the evidence against several widely used chemicals keeps mounting.
In December, Environmental Protection Agency adminstrator Lisa P. Jackson gave chilling testimony before the Senate committee on environment and public works. She said that while it’s the EPA’s job to ensure that chemicals used in products are safe, “under existing law, we cannot give that assurance.”
Of the 80,000 chemicals used in the United States, the agency has been able to require testing on only about 200 and limited use of only five. “We’ve only been able to regulate a handful of chemicals, and we know very little about the rest,” Jackson said.
Later that month, the agency announced a new “chemicals of concern” list and immediately added two – phthalates, used to make plastics flexible, and PBDEs, which are fire retardants.
Other high-profile targets include perfluorinated compounds, used to make nonstick cookware, and bisphenol A (BPA), found in hard plastics, baby bottles, sip cups, and the linings of some food cans.

Global Ocean Protection Measures Have Failed
Thousands of tons of trash are thrown into the sea each year, endangering humans and wildlife. A classified German government report obtained by SPIEGEL ONLINE indicates that efforts by the United Nations and the European Union to clean up our oceans have failed entirely.
Since the world’s oceans are so massive, few people seem to have a problem with dumping waste into them. But plastics degrade at very a slow rate, and huge amounts of them are sloshing around in our oceans. Wildlife consumes small pieces causing many of them to die, since the plastics are full of poisons. And, as experts warn, we’ve reached a point where it’s even getting dangerous for humans to consume seafood.
Given these conditions, the international community has been pushing for four decades for massive bureaucratic efforts aimed at clearing the oceans of waste. In 1973, the United Nations sponsored a pact for protecting the oceans from dumping. Additional provisions have been added to the so-called Marpol Convention — short for “marine pollution” — on six different occasions. And nine years ago, the European Union put directives on the books that forbid any dumping of maritime waste into the ocean while in ports.HERE is the rest of Axel Bojanowski’s story
BPA in baby bottles. Phthalates in children’s books. Lead in toys. As parents’ awareness of potential toxins in the home has grown in recent years, so has their anxiety. Minnesota has helped lead the way to regulate worrisome chemicals, and federal reform.
Phthalates. Dioxin. Deca. Bisphenol A.
A half-dozen years ago, only scientists knew these words. Now, they’re bandied about in early-childhood education classes and online parenting message boards.
Parents have been told that potentially harmful chemicals are lurking in everything from the plastic of their infants’ baby bottles to paint on toys, dust bunnies behind the television and the fragrance in toddler shampoo.
Within the next few weeks, a bill to reform the nation’s laws regulating chemicals is expected to be introduced in Congress. The head of the Environmental Protection Agency says tightening chemical regulation is one of the Obama administration’s environmental priorities.
How did concern over chemicals move from obscurity onto center stage? Certainly, the change is due to recent advances in understanding how chemicals enter and affect the human body, and to the shift to a Democratic Congress and administration. But it also has to do with parents’ rising worries and efforts to mobilize their concerns into a movement for reform.
“People really started to pay attention when there were concerns about lead in Thomas the (Tank Engine toys). That was three holiday seasons ago, and it was all over the news,” said Lindsay Dahl of the Safer Chemicals, Healthy Families coalition. “That was the beginning of a wave of consumers starting to realize that there are chemicals in toys and personal products that can sometimes have negative health outcomes.
