Come on, KTVZ -- what the hell does that mean? You broke in with a live or what appeared to be a live cut in only to say you are having severe techincal difficulties and can't broadcast the news. We don't need video, just READ the news to us.
What the hell is going on over there? Anyone know?
In the last few days, however, neither the local NBC nor the CW feeds are being transmitted. (I’m still getting the other 3 as normal.) Anyone else having this trouble? It could be technical issues ... or I suppose it could be something KTVZ is doing behind the scenes. After reading that front-page story in The Bulletin last week (“Satellite subscribers in Deschutes lose channels”), I guess I’m naturally skeptical about our local NBC affiliate and its motives.
Count me among the many who enjoy your blog...SnarkyBend,
It may have been the recent windstorms but I’m naturally skeptical.
In addition to my satellite setup, I -- probably like many non-Bend Broadband clients -- also receive 5 digital over-the-air channels:

So, our reader comments state that Peter Murphy is going to work for ODOT and Kathy Cullis is going to KOHD. Is KOHD already hiring their anchors? Who wants to give us the scoop?
So it seems with the management change (sans Jim DeChant as GM) NewsChannel 21 is finally diversifying their staff which is a good thing in our book. Now we won't have to see dingy 20 something blonde chicks laughing their way through newscasts anymore. Kudos to KTVZ for their additions of the following staff members: Keisha Burns, Tony Fuller and Rashad Mills.
A reader alerted us to the KTVZ employment page where there is an opening for news director. A few weeks ago it was reported in our local paper that Lee Anderson would be the Lead Anchor for KTVZ which explains the opening.
Hack Bend reports there is a new radio station in town, which is part of the Bend Radio Group. It's on your FM dial at 94.7 FM. Their format is Modern Rock. Your thoughts? We won't bother listening since we're country fans.
Also, any news on the sale of KFXO to KTVZ? And has anyone heard the radio ads for KOHD or seen their TV promos? The techno music totally bugs the hell out of us but other wise they're OK. Since ABC has better programming than NBC, who wants to take a bet at who will win sweeps the first time out?
This was in our inbox regarding the upcoming city council race ...
Dear Friend,
I am deeply concerned about a dangerous turn in the upcoming City Council election for the seat currently held by Bill Friedman and you should be concerned too.
I am sending this note to practically my entire email list and I want to encourage you to forward it on to yours as well if, after reading it, you feel the same way I do. I have not taken this type of action before which should show you how strongly I feel about this now. I am sending it to you BCC (blind carbon copy) so that you won't get bothered with Reply Alls.
The Central Oregon Builders Association and the Central Oregon Association of Realtors has amassed $50,000 (FIFTY THOUSAND) dollars to buy a City Council seat for Clint Chick, a board member of the builders association. As reported in the Bulletin, $20,000 has already been recorded and the rest is soon to follow. To put this in perspective, I am not aware of any single contribution to any City Council campaign that has been more than $3,000.
Think about it - $50,000 from the building industry lobbyists to a candidate with no established track record to try to take out a moderate - Bill Friedman is not a fringe candidate on the far left or far right and he has in fact helped bring much needed balance to the Council. Do you think a candidate receiving that much money will listen to you? or will his mind already be made up?
Bend is obviously facing many challenges associated with rapid growth. I don't know Clint Chick personally, but his campaign talks about bringing a new voice for Bend. What will that voice sound like? First of all, I guarantee you won't hear it in the generalities of a campaign. But, one need only connect the dots (or dollars). If you think Bend has challenges associated with rapid growth now what will it be like if we elect someone who is backed by $50,000 from organizations that benefit from even more rapid growth?
I've disagreed with Bill on numerous issues, but I've never questioned his integrity, commitment, and desire to work collaboratively and effectively to help make Bend a better place to live and work. He is remarkably creative, brings strong financial skills to the table and has played a major role in many of the recent successes in the City - outstanding public safety services, funding for Newport Bridge, establishment of our public transit system, update of our development code, formation of the neighborhood associations, etc.
Regardless of whether you agree with Bill on everything or not, I hope there is one thing we can agree on. Seats on the City Council SHOULD NOT BE FOR SALE! I hope you will join me in supporting Bill Friedman - by talking to your friends and neighbors in the weeks ahead, telling them what is going on, and by casting your vote on November 7.

There was an interesting letter from a Bendite about Bend Film snubbing a film shot in Bend about Jake's Truck Stop. Here is the text:
Shame on you, BendFilm, for so badly missing the boat on a fascinating look at Bend's history!
Yes, it's that time of year once again. The Bend Film Festival has announced its line-up with the usual amount of snobbery. With the number of films submitted this year, I'm sure many great films did not make the cut, or perhaps some were simply lost between the seat cushions of their couch. However, a glaring omission in the line-up was a documentary that I was fortunate enough to view prior to being submitted to the festival.
Jake's Truck Stop documents a vital piece of Bend's history as seen through the eyes of the truckers and workers whose lives were affected by the closing of this Bend institution, including Lyle Hicks, the diner's manager for the last 20 years, a man who has given so much back to the community he calls home, and who put not only his heart, but his ass on the line to keep the dream alive. It includes rarely seen footage behind the walls of the diner where only truckers were allowed to go, staff meetings regarding the closing of the truck stop, candid interviews with the truckers themselves, staff members who regarded their position as much more than just a job, and longtime regulars who remember a Bend that no longer exists.
BendFilm has sent a very clear message about the direction they are taking their festival, and more importantly the direction they are taking the City of Bend. Our community strives hard to keep the spirit and history of Bend alive during tremendous growth and change. BendFilm preaches they are for and with this community; however not including a historical film like Jake's Truck Stop only emphasizes that the festival is not about cultivating our community, but about putting Bend on a map we do not want to be on.
It is obvious the festival is not built around inspiring or educating the local community, but catering to all those Aspen wannabes, mostly from Los Angeles, who will soon be clogging our streets looking so very important with their cell phones stuck to their ears and their all access passes dangling proudly for all to see. Hey, it’s about building connections and a buzz, right?
So don't look for me at the festival, but say "Hi" to the Soul Man guy. And have a safe drive back to LA.

The staff at Snarky Bend has been enjoying the summer in Bend -- mountain biking, hiking, vacationing, going to Munch n Music. We haven't had time to blog about snarky stuff or even watch the news because we've been so busy and the same must be for everyone else because no one is emailing us dirt. That being said, we didn't see it coming that Z21's parent company was buying Fox 39. You know what, that is really sad for a few reasons: 1) it's widely know that Z21 doesn't pay their employees the greatest while Fox 39 does 2) Fox 39, once they got the technical glitches out, was a better newscast 3) what's that mean for the Fox 39 staff?
We thought it was a FCC violation to have a monopoly on news in a market. Anyone know the law or did the Bush Administration get rid of it?
Anyway, the first thing that came to mind was "Can't beat 'em, buy 'em." We can't wait to see what happens with KOHD.

Yesterday the Bulletin published an article about the Bend Visitor & Convention Bureau's new flash animation that cost over $35,000 to make. What did BVCB and DVA think, they wouldn't get criticism? But really, is this video worth someone's job being in jeopardy? Come on people, get real. The video was not that bad and probably served it's purpose of being sent virally all over the country yesterday.
The article in today's Bulletin suggested via John Hummel that the Bend BVCB should have talked to the city council before launching the campaign. Is it standard practice for all marketing materials be shown to the city council that the BVCB puts out? Probably not, so why now?
Seriously, what's the fuss about? They were trying a new way to reach folks to get them to spend their money in our city boosting our economy. Big deal if they portrayed us as a bunch of pot smoking, incest loving rednecks. Can't we make fun of ourselves and laugh a little bit. The one thing missing ... California references.

Bend's got a Craigslist at last (http://bend.craigslist.org). No more having to post on the Portland site and deal with idiots who can't read an ad to see the thing for sale is in Bend.

Hey Snarky,
Have you ever noticed the photograph on the 7:25 a.m. news update on Z21? It’s a photo of our mountains but it is flipped the wrong way … instead of the mountains from left to right being Broken Top, North Sister, Mt. Jefferson, it’s the reverse. How can a local NOT notice that?

So I happen to be watching the TV Guide channel today and there is an episode of TV Candy, which Melissa Rivers hosts. To my surprise the girl they were transferming looked awfully familiar. It was Deanne from Z21. She was made over to look more like "Faith" From the show Hope & Faith. I can't seem to find any pictures or clips of it.
I thought maybe you could investigate it more and find something. It is an episode from August of 2005.

We haven't been able to get through the plan that KTVZ has posted online for the new transit system but it's about time. We hope it becomes a reality because it's really needed in our community. I know Bend isn't the caliber that Portland and Eugene are but that's what sets us apart from them (oh and that they have Trader Joes and good shopping for the ladies).

Bend City Council candidate Derek Stevens called a local television reporter who interviewed him a "little hottie" in an online chat room posting and placed her picture on the site.
Stevens, who is a designer and builder, acknowledged the postings on Gorillamask Forum, but said he would rather have voters focus on the issues than what he called "mindless fluff."
While on the forum, Stevens discussed the upcoming City Council race, as well as national politics. He often swapped verbal jabs with fellow users.
Among the more explicit posts were comments made about a local television reporter.
In November, Stevens posted the picture of the reporter, who had recently interviewed him at his office. Stevens called the reporter a "little hottie."
Holy hell, this guys running for Bend city councilor? That's even too far for Snarky... As if Bend didn't have enough problems already..........

How many times do we need to investigate when South Sister is going to blow? Oh yea, when KTVZ gets a whole batch of new reporters. I think Snarky Bend has seen KTVZ do this story 10 times. Come up with something more original already.

You know who is a total loser? No, not Lee Anderson. No, not Peter Murphy. No, not the folks at the Source. This guy at www.bendoregon.viralinks.com.
The staff at Snarky Bend would like to go on the record and say we're in no way affiliated with this turkey. He is calling us a contributor. Yeah right! It's more like he's feeding the content of four popular Bend blogs onto his site. Isn't that what Bendblogs does (and does well)?
Can you please take us off as a contributor? We don't want to be on your dumbass site.

There was a photo on the front of the Bulletin over the weekend that said "don't BEND Walla Walla." We can't find it but you can read the full details here. It's sorta funny 'cause everyone wants to come here but no one will admit it.

Kayna was live at some horse event and tossed it backed to Brittney Hopper who, before came back on camera, yelled a surprised "WHAT?" in the mic. A classic KTVZ moment. Thanks Brit for the laugh.

Here at Snarkybend we'd like you, the viewers, to give our lovely news stations ideas for sweeps stories. So comment with your sweeps ideas and help out our friends because who needs to see another sasquatch story.
Our review is posted in our various comments to this post.
We'd like to point out something really hilarious but not surprising. For every 20 hits to this blog 5 come from KTVZ and 1 come from the Meredith Corp ie KFXO. Yes, we know who is looking at the blog and can tell who is commenting.
So what does that tell you about how many times someone is visiting this blog?

We thought that before we'd post our review and thoughts of Fox Central Oregon, we'd leave it up to our loyal fans/foes to tell us what they thought of Mr. Murphy and the crew.
So, tell us your thoughts of the Fox Central Oregon Newscast. Thumbs up, thumbs down?

Your fellow Snarkers were reading the Bulletin this morning and stumbled upon an ad for Fox Central Oregon. The ad featured anchors Peter Murphy and Kathy Cullis and definately gives you a feel that Fox is totally going to kick Z21's ass. Why do we say that? Their main anchors aren't kids right out of college. They look polished and ready for the challenge of covering breaking news stories happening in Central Oregon. The look like the type of folks that will scoop the Bulletin (Z21's main source of news).
Why does the name Kathy Cullis sound familiar? Was she a radio personality? We really wish they had a website with bios
Fox Central Oregon, we're so ready for you to enter our homes and tv sets.
Today I was driving down Revere and noticed the big Fox News billboard with Peter Murphy on it at the corner of NE Division. Thought I’d alert snarky fans
Apparently, Bob Shaw didn't like that someone drew a cartoon of him with his signature saying "Have a Sparkling Day." Around the Bend/Oregon Blogosphere is the story of how our favorite and only (for now) TV station a sent a lawyer after the this guy whose t-shirts we adore. We were late in getting this story but a fewblogs picked it up yesterday. He's not only got C3 refusing to give him a booth but now the local media station is sicking attorneys on him for using their "phrase."
If you don't want to be made fun of or your "phrase" used, then get the hell off the TV and trademark your "phrase."
According to the author of a short article in The Daily India, if people in India are tired of the crowds in New Delhi or Bombay, Indians might want to consider a move to Bend.
If you like Americana living and a slow pace, then Bend Oregon is for you. There is a saying there. "there is normal time, and there is Central Oregon time". The people are down to earth and the shools are calm and not infected with large city problems like gangs and heavy drugs.
If your want to live in Bend, Oregon, You should know:
- The sun shines all the time, but can get cold in the winters. - You need to learn how to say hello more to strangers. - Do not be in a hurry, its Central Oregon. - Your get a lot of real estate for your dollars..
Here is some important realities to know:
- Cost of living is the same as the cities, yet wages are lower. - Bend Oregon does have pretty good medical support, however you may have to wait longer for appointments.. - People in Central Oregon really do know how to drive in the snow. _ Nothing stops when it snows, life goes on including school.
Bend Oregon Real Estate is getting higher prices by the day, however is much lower than the big cities. The hard part is how to make a living. It is always best to have your own business to bring over, if possible. Living in Central Oregon is good for the soul and good for the family.
This article represents the views and opinions of the author and not of www.dailyindia.com.
In between being pissed off because it's spring (some of the staff at Snarky Bend is sick of being penned up inside) and checking Bend Blogs, we came across a disturbing post from our favorite t-shirt seller.
It's a sad day. I had plans on selling some of my designs this summer for fun at the Bend Summer Festival, Bend Fall Festival and Munch & Music. I decided to ask if I could participate in the jury selection and this is what C3 events wrote:
Thanks for your inquiry. While we can appreciate the humor in your artwork, the purpose of the festivals is to promote Bend in a positive manner and introduce artists artwork to the community. My guess is the jurying committee would not select your work for admission, even though we all can find the humor in it.I appreciate your checking with us first. Good luck in your promotion of your products.
Man, whatta bummer. I do understand this event promoter's position. By allowing me to participate would put the group's sponsorship money at risk. But...it still doesn't feel good. Banned....Censored...Prohibited to express.
Any ideas on where I can sell my shirts aside online?
Poor Slider. Could it be that C3 didn't like this design? Mr. Cameron Clark sure does have a monopoly on events here in town and he's not giving this guy a chance to sell his hilarious t-shirts! He lets the gal with the clay animal figurines doing it into the festivals but not a shirt that says "Poverty With a View?" What other events are out there that C3 doesn't run? I bet the Saturday Market would let someone sell these hilarious shirts.
Anyone have other ideas? I thought freedom of speech was accepted in the good ole USA? Back to the fireplace to keep warm.
Snarky Bend: Burns is really a better place, well, is getting really old. Just as old as making fun of the local news talent and how many times a certain Bend radio station plays Kelly Clarkson. We must remember that in some eyes, Bend is small tits compared to the Rose City or the Bay Area. So, help us come up with a new title. We need some excitement around here. If we get another email about how the folks at a certain station were told to not look at our site but do every chance they can while at work, well, the staff might go on strike, ummm okay?
According to today’s Cascade Business News, veteran Oregon reporter/anchor Peter Murphy (formerly of KOIN and KEZI) will be the Lead News Anchor and Managing Editor of Your High Desert 10 O’clock News.
The short news blip states the newscast will start mid-April and “finishing touches are being put on the new studio and newsroom at the Fox 39 facility in Bend.”
You mean we'll have an actual veteran newscaster from a big station doing the news?? And just when we were getting used to those hard-hitting reports on questionable goofy websites from KTVZ! Other rumors around town and in our email box say that some former familiar faces of KTVZ may set to help kick out the new local newscast.
Ya know the news in our small town must be slow when reporters do a story on a website called married secrets. The motto of this website -- "Discreet Dating For Married People." Lee Anderson made it a point to say that not only men, but women in Central Oregon, post their info on this site.
Is this news people? No, we don't. In fact, I think they were stretching to find something to segue into Barney's shameless plug about their RSS feed for KTVZ.com.
Come on Fox ... when is your newscast starting already?
Wow! We ask (in the comments) and we shall receive! Benditeescreated something snarky for us. Our personal favorite is their "Sparkling Day" design. Of course, if we did buy something this cat would know who Snarky is and well since his wife is a well known blogger, we better not because I'm sure she has a big mouth.
Please tell me you have heard the commercial for Mt. Bachelor that states ‘the number 1 lift system in the Pacific Northwest’ Number 1 in what – breakdowns, Unreliability, closures, slowdowns…. I mean please – We have the worst system in the country. Aren’t there legal ramifications for lying in advertising?
Truth in advertising? Not when there's $$$ to be had... remember, tourism is one of Bend's top industries... and Bachelor is a BIG part of that... we can't have a silly little thing like the truth get in the way of raking in the dough...
What are your thoughts on it being a renter's market in Bend (Business section of the Bulletin on Saturday)? You can either rent a house on Awbrey Butte for $1300 or have a mortgage payment of $2000 a month.
It's a boring Sunday morning and well, we have nothing better to do than surf MySpace.com. And what do we find? Kayla's not at KTVZ anymore according to her profile.
Another email tip! We love it when you send us this stuff, especially the juicy stuff. And this is suitably snarky for us:
I'm sure you're familiar with the KFXO "High Desert Happenings" segment, which features a tall skinny blonde girl running through a list of events around town, then closes with "For High Desert Happenings, this is Amber. Hope to see you out there!!" Really no way of getting her grating sing-song voice into print, but you get the gist of it.
Anyway, "Amber" is Amber Lauchner (not sure about the spelling), a local girl and one-time contestant on "The Bachelor." I don't know if she went in for the drunken crying jags and making out with the star of the show in a hot tub while cameras roll -- I'd rather scoop my eyes out with a melon baller than watch that dreck -- but I have serious questions about the mental state of anyone who would volunteer to be on such a show. Plus, I didn't know she was on until the season was over.
I've also heard that she may be in the running for the on-camera talent once the KFXO newscast gets up and running, but I'm less than certain about that.
Don't really have much of a scoop for you,
but I can tell you that Alex Drude can be found fairly often at the
Westside Tavern on Galveston. I know you've been trying to get a fix on
his whereabouts, so there you have it. It's my understanding he's
looking at a job out of state.
I think Snarky needs to start hanging out on the westside. Drude, call KFXO -- they may have a sports casting job for you.
This was actually stolen from two bend blogs because no one is sending us juicy tidbits. Thanks bloggers. Oh and our email has been dead, folks. Send us stuff already ....
Curious about a launch date for the KFXO 10pm news? So are we. Still no word of an official date... but Monday, March 27th is rumored.
While it will be nice to have an alternative news product to Z21... oops, I mean NewsChannel 21... I caution you about getting your hopes up too high.
The FOX 10pm newscast will be interesting to watch. Many of us in Portland are very curious to see how KFXO is going to get a FULL HOUR newscast on the air each weeknight with such a small staff. There will only be one anchor... and that person must act as the newscast producer, editor and news department director. And we're especially interested to see how much KFXO intends to rely on KPTV for beyond-Bend news content -- because there is no fast way to transfer video between the two stations. I'm not exaggerating when I say the fastest way to get video from KPTV to KFXO is to take a tape to the airport & put it on a plane to Redmond.
Bottom line... this newscast could look like amateur hour at it's worst, especially at the beginning. Hopefully after a shake-down period, everyone will get into their groove and the show will turn out OK. Because of KPTV's graphical help, however, the newscast will look good -- but the execution of the show is what I'm worried about.
Did you read the Forced Out article on the Bend Bulletin site? I think it's terrible what's happening to these people. Why don't you post about the problem?
Yes, we saw the unfortunate story of folks being forced out of their trailer parks to pave the way for $500K homes on teeny tiny lots. All we can say is get used to it people. There is nothing we can do unless the city planners open up the urban growth boundry and the demand for land goes down in our county.
So we leave it up to our readers ... how do you feel about this?
Please read the road signs regarding speed limits. We find it truly annoying and disrepectful to the 4 cars behind you wanting to go the speed limit of 45 when school is not in session.
Do you think children are at school Sunday afternoon around 5:30pm? Put your glasses on and read the road signs.
We realize the year or so old law requiring *some* changes to *some* streets in a school zone to be 20mph all day and night can be confusing, but according to the ODOT site and we quote "READ THE SIGNS as you approach any school zone to determine your appropriate speed"
We know you knew you saw the first sign when you put on your brakes at the sign showing the impending school zone, so we know you can try to read when you feel like it.
*This was a zone that you did not need to go 25 miles UNDER the speed limit.* The appropriate speed limit according to ODOT during that time was a limit of 45.
Do us Bendites a favor, pick up a current copy of a Drivers manuel, you apparently need to go back to Driver's ed.
I wish that I had TIVO because there is a KTVZ news commerical that just cracks me up and I have to watch again. While watching the fine programming of our only (until next month) local TV station a commerical came on with Lee Anderson talking up their staff of veteran news reporters. Hello, excuse me? Who are you talking about -- yourself and Barney? Everyone is pretty much new, Lee. I hope you didn't write that commerical pal because we're all scratching our heads in Central Oregon wondering who you're talking about.
The new news commericals sure seem to be gearing up for their competition and trying to keep viewers.
Has anyone else out there seen the commerical I'm talking about? Discuss.
Are you looking for that extra special gift to show Bend how you feel on this most romantic of days? Here's a suggestion.
Take down your Christmas lights. I know they look pretty hanging on your house, especially after all those windstorms have given them that chic, dangly look, but it's the middle of February. We're sick of looking at them. You don't even have to buy us chocolate and roses, if you will just take down the damn lights.
An anonymous comment from our last post needs to be talked about:
I'll agree that the parking garage is indeed worthy snark fodder. However, I think Bend's pathetic and repeated attempts to shove outdoor malls in our face might be an even better subject. How on earth, with a city of this size and growing at this pace, can you not have an indoor mall that remains fully(or near) leased. I just don't get it. Look at our temperature swings between winter and summer. It makes no sense to me.
We don't get it, either! Granted, compared to the shopping malls of the Big City, our little ol Bend River Mall and Mountain View Mall weren't much to look at--but now there's nothing to look at! For some reason "they" decided that Bend needed big outdoor parking plazas instead of indoor malls because... why? Are out-of-town developers trying to replicate the Southern California experience?
Here's a clue, folks: trying to bring the SoCal climate-lifestyle to Central Oregon does not make sense. Well if you think it does, let's talk after you've wandered around the "open air shopping mall" in 25-degree winter weather in icy parking lots...
So a trip downtown reveals what the new parking garage is turning into: a bricked-up concrete cube! It looks like they're building a prison!! They are bricking up the outer walls--now, we can't claim to be experts on the vast intricacies involved in the complicated world of car parking (we've only been to the Big City occasionally, you know), but aren't most parking garages at least, you know, open air?
I guess they felt that they didn't have ENOUGH controversy with the parking garage prison so they decided erect an ugly concrete and cinderblock box right at the heart of down town, one of the first things you see when you get off the Snarkway--oops we mean of course the Parkway. Seriously, it looks like something a dumptruck crapped out.
We would like to know when the City of Bend will be completing the Empire Avenue, as we remember from an article back in November that it would be completed
BY THE END OF NOVEMBER 2005.
Hooker Creek Construction crews are expected to finish work by the end of this month on a 1,500-foot section of Empire Avenue.
So, tell us WHY we have not seen
ANY work or workers
there since
THANKSGIVING
? Then, this road closure bulletin comes across our desks today...um, hello?
Why do you think the drivers are getting fed up and going across the barriers? BECAUSE THIS "project" and "detour" was supposed to be COMPLETED MONTHS AGO!
Come on City of Bend, it wasn't even snowing or bad weather back in mid-late November.
I missed the morning news today but saw on Bend.com that the D&D closed due to a fire in a bathroom last night. Snarky Bend wants to know why did they close this time? When we’ve been in there for breakfast, the whole place smells of 1000 cigarettes and how is that different from a fire in the bathroom?
We don't pick on the radio often but reader "D" sent us this:
First of all nice site. I have a story for you. I won the Eric Clapton Crossroads "Ticket to Ride" Giveaway (Dallas Texas 8/04) from Doug and Dori Donaho at Clear 107 Radio station. It turned into a nightmare. When I got back to Bend I had an email exchange with Doug and Dori that is priceless. If you want me to email the exchange of emails between Dori and myself let me know. Keep up the good work.
Dear Doug and Dorrie,
My name is "D" and I was the unlucky winner of the Crossroads Festival trip to Dallas Texas. I had a cell phone and was prepared to call the station but my trip was a disaster. The flight went ok. Arriving late and tired in Dallas I went to my hotel to find out it was closed because the power was out due to a thunderstorm. The room at the Marriott was a $99.00 suite and I asked what they would do. They said they would call around and find us a room. We were sent to a $39.00 a night dump that had signs in the parking lot warning of crime and theft. The room smelled of sulfur (the water) and the fan in the bathroom didn't work. The first 2 days were general admission so we got to see a few acts. For the big show on Sunday we arrived to find we had just about the worst seats in the house. If you are going to send someone on a trip with as much hype as you did this one why would you get seats so far away. My friend and I could not even see the screens that were on either side of the stage. Both of us ended up buying general admission tickets so we could get on the field and at least be able to see who was playing. I complained to the Marriott when I got back home about the room and their staff. Chuck Chackel had $320.85 credited back to his credit card. I guess Chuck is keeping the money as I have heard nothing from your station. I should have had that money retuned to me and my friend to cover us having to buy tickets to see the big show and for our miserable hotel. I am so glad I did not take my wife on this trip. When we got back my buddy said "you got ripped off". If you are going to all this trouble to send someone so far away you should at least make an effort to get them seats where they can see the show. I took a few pictures from my seat and will send them on to you. My friend also told me it was not worth him taking the time off of work that he did. Same goes for me. We both feel we wasted our vacation time. I think you should talk to Mr. Chackel and have him send me the $320.85 that was supposed to be part of my "prize" or I will take other actions. In light of these circumstances it's the least he and the Clear could do. If I sound ungrateful, I am. I was supposed to be a winner but I feel like I was ripped off. I was a loser at 101.7. "D"
Dear D,
I do apologize for the seats being sucky, we had no idea, we would have promoted it as such had we known. You said the flight was okay, that's good because the airfare along with the concert tix and lodging was quite pricey. I'm glad we didn't waste our money on the flight at least, but as far as the power outage goes, or the customer service you received, that was way out of our hands, and I won't take responsibility or apologize for that.
There are some who would have appreciated the airfare and just being there, I'm sorry that you feel like a loser. We cannot possibly forsee the individual tolerance levels of our winners. There were others who probably would have enjoyed the opportunity no matter what happened, myself being one of them, I would have enjoyed the show from the parking lot if I could have afforded the trip. This couldn't be more disheartning for me, luckily, every single other winner & guest felt honored to win and had once-in-a-lifetime experiences. Yours was the only negative feedback we recieved.
Again, I apologize that you felt so "ripped off". I can relate, just so you know, your note was as dissappointing for me as the prize was for you, I hope that helps. Sounds like a costly disaster for us as well as you and your friend.
As far as being re-imbursed, that is not our call, Doug forwarded your e-mail to our Station Manager and Owner.
Sincerely, Dori Donoho
Dori,
I could have stayed home and listened to the concert on Sirius radio. We were so far away from the stage the sound in the stadium echoed. I'm sure you would have been let down as well. I have learned one thing from this - Don't Believe The Hype! I will scan the picture taken from my seat today and send it on to you. I thought I was going to see a concert not just listen to one. Had I known the seats were so bad and I would be staying in a dump I would not have gone. What a let down it was. What makes me feel so bad is putting my friend through this. Keep the $350.85 and get better tickets from a ticket service for your future contest winners. I will be turning off my radio and listening to CD's from now on. I'm sure you meant well but anyone else who went through what we did would not be happy. I felt honered to win, but why take vacation time and fly so far to see a show you can't see? My friend and I were truely excited when we left but came back feeling like we wasted our time and money. The truth hurts some time, but it is what it is. I'm sure the other winners actually got to see the concerts they went to and had a nice room - I did not. I had to buy a ticket just to see the show on a TV screen. Say what you want, but that is not my idea of being a contest winner nor is standing in a parking lot listening to a show. Keep the $350.85. so someone in the future won't feel like they wasted their time and money as we do. What a disaster. I thank god I did not take my wife.

Dear "D" I'm as depressed as you are and it just gets worse for me, we will miss your listenership, I want you to know it was COSTLY for us too, if you could walk in my shoes, you would be trying to see a bright side as well, We did not intend to spend a small fortune on a horrible trip for you that ultimately cost us your respect. At least acknowledge that we did not PURPOSELY provide you with a horrilbe prize....we had great intentions and are just as disappointed as you. Please don't act like we are revelling in this disaster. I would like to point out we COULD HAVE FIXED IT FROM HERE FOR YOU HAD YOU CALLED. 2 months later we find out all of this after the Marriott and Eric Clapton folks said all went well. We are not mind readers and don't bother responding, just know, it's screwed from our stand point too. Take comfort in that if you can. Good luck with the CD's
Dori
Dori, I DID contact the station and nobody called me back! I also called another time and told them to make sure Mr.Chackel was credited $350.85 back to his card after talking to Marriott. I even asked the secretary at your station to call me back and let me know if Mr. Chackel was credited back the $350.85. I GAVE HER MY PHONE NUMBER! NOBODY called. Enough is Enough. I will enjoy my cd's and will tell everyone who will listen about the way I was treated by your station. I DID say in my last email "I KNOW YOU MEANT WELL". After the CD comment I have my doubts. Keep the money. I tried to be nice but now I am going to get my story out. I TRIED!
"D"
"D", We are checking to see if indeed Chuck's credit card account was credited. When we find that out, we will get back with you.
What i don't understand is why you didn't contact the people who gave you the package. Myself or Dori. We just found out with you e-mail today about the troubles. We want everyone to have a good experience from our station. We take it personally. Now, you have two different $ amounts listed that you say were credited back to Chuck. Which one is it? Of course we will verify with his account too. For the future, if you choose to play any on air contests on any radio station, and you end up winning again, you will run the risk of an incident that is beyond the station's control. You can't control an act of God. Just ask the folks at Marriott. You won the same package I would have got had i been the one making the trip. If you think telling everyone who will listen about the horrible experience Clear 101.7 thrust you into, then you must do what makes you feel better. Just remember, we gave away the prize, the travel agency booked the trip. I would think we could all be grownups and try to make things better. For our company, and for you.
Doug
Doug & Dori,
This is a picture from my nosebleed seat at the Crossroads festival. I'm not sure who it is playing due to the distance. As stated I called my wife from Dallas, Texas and asked her to call your radio station about the hotel situation. She did and was told someone would get back to her. Mike Cheney called her back. He told her "I don't know what you want me to do as the reservations are in Dave's name and if Dave can get a refund it is his". "If he wants to go elsewhere he will have to pay for it out of his own pocket". Do you call that taking care of a problem? My wife does not lie. When I talked to my wife late that evening she told me what he said. I was floored. That's when I decided not to waste my time trying to call Doug and Dori. It seemed like your station didn't give a damn. After returning home I called the Marriott main office and told them my story. They were shocked and apologized and said they would research this. They called me back, apologized again and said a full refund would be made. They gave a damn. After returning, I contacted your station and told the girl that answered the phone at your station my story and to make sure that Chuck Chackel had a credit on his credit card from Marriott. I gave her my name and phone number and asked her to have someone call me back to confirm and nobody called. That is why I was so upset. I should have at least received a call back from someone. I do feel like your station was just trying to blow me off. After waiting over a month I decided to write you yesterday and tell you how bad it went in Dallas and I'm sorry if it hurt your feelings. I resent being treated the way I was in the email yesterday. Some of Dori's comments were uncalled for. First of all the comments "Many people would be happy for the airfare and just being there". "Individual tolerance levels of our winners". "Enjoy the show from the parking lot". "I'd be happy if I could have afforded the trip". First of all I know what you make and its way more than me Dori. Second, do you really believe all that nonsense?. C'mon. Totally uncalled for. You did not have all the facts and you treated my like a fool. After rereading the email exchanges I don't want your ill gained money. You keep it. I find it hard to believe somebody from Marriott said to Dori "I had a good time" as I did not stay there. I also find it hard to believe somebody from Eric Clapton said "I had a good time" as well, as nobody ever asked me. Your station has had more than enough time to do what's right here and you treated me like a fool yesterday. I am beyond mad now. Do not contact me after this email. I will deal with this in my own way. It was your station that screwed up not me. Thanks for all the emails, my printer is humming right now and so will my forward button. You should have gotten the facts first and thought a little more before you started typing such ridiculous statements. I am not a bad guy but I have no tolerance for people who will not do what is right and what they say they will do. I do not care for unwarranted attacks, or excuses either. You obviously have a severe communication problem at your station. I will do my best to inform the public and pass on these emails to your competitors and the proper officials. You can't treat people this way and get away with it. Yesterday I said "I know you meant well". I was dead wrong. I could never treat someone in the manor you have me. "Take comfort in that if you can"...sheesh. You should be ashamed. Keep the money, fly to Portland and go stand in a parking lot at a concert and then go stay at a 2nd rate smelly motel. "D" / the BIG winner...errr Big loser at 101.7

"D," Hi Dave. I have read your emails and description of your trip to Dallas and certainly apoligise for any slight you feel you received. I have traveled a lot and I know that stuff happens. When it does I have no choice but to cope with it. Your trip was set up by a local travel agency. They arranged the air and the hotel. We certainly can't control any of the circumstances that could arise, such as missed connections, lost luggage or problems with the hotel. I did speak to your wife and I did suggest that there was little I could do from here and that you should make whatever arrangements you could and that we would give to you any refund that came to reimburse you for whatever it cost you out of pocket to get to somewhere nicer than the hotel the Marriott sent you to. When I called the next day to check with your wife she told me it had been taken care of, that you were back at the Marriott and things were fine. Frankly, I never checked further regarding a refund. I have asked my accounting office to check and see if indeed a refund was posted to Chuck Chackel's credit card. When I get that information and what the amount is, we will send that along to you gladly. Your prize included air fare and hotel and the hotel chosen was the Marriott and not some flea bag. We chose and paid for a quality hotel and certainly wanted your experience to be good. Regarding the tickets, we purchased them from ticketmaster and requested the best seats available at the time of purchase. Again, I was not familiar with the venue or where the seats were. If you were able to purchase better tickets then I would be happy to reimburse you for those tickets as well.
I have been in this business for 30 years and have done hundreds of these types of promotions and trips for listeners. Occasionally, a winner shows up and the hotel has no reservation. Connections are sometimes missed through no fault of the winner and I thing a winner's luggage was lost one time. Believe me when I say that no one would wish upon any prize winner some of the things that happened to you on this trip, particularly as it relates to the problems at the hotel. I would certainly agree that for being in the communications business we sometimes don't communicate very well. I would have appreciated being called directly and had this brought to my attention earlier. As you know, it usually gets more and quicker action when you talk to someone at the top.
Again, I apoligise to you on behalf of the station and the company. Please send me your address and upon confirmation of a refund from Chuck, I will forward a check back to you.
All the best to you.
Mike Cheney/ GM
"D" tells Snarky Bend, he never got refunded the money

"D" tells Snarky Bend, he never got refunded the money
"D"
- one day it's snowing and the next day it's 60 degrees - your neighbor turns his small backyard into a garage with apartment to rent out - your neighbor is selling his house for $150,000 more than he bought it for the year before - you run into someone who didn't know Bend City Grill was once Legends - your neighbors on either side made a small fortune on their houses in California and paid cash for their Bend homes and don't have to work
I'm sure everyone can come up with something to add to this. The Staff at Snarky Bend can come up with plenty more but we'd like everyone to add their two cents on this one.

Could Phil Frame be Bob Shaw's long lost son? Same looks, same boring forcasts as when Bob started years ago.
I'm waiting for Phil to come out with "Have a sparkling night"
The staff at Snarky Bend are anxiously awaiting some competition so that we can actually maybe have a real newscast in Bend. See Z21, this is what happens when you don't renew contracts of your good newscasters...people become disinterested and want to move on.

No, Deanne Goodman of NewsChannel 21, we're sorry to say you won't be spared the fate of other Z21'ers from us here at Snarky... it's nothing personal, but when you wear what appears to be a bright purple floral bathrobe on the air, well, we notice.

So we were going to post something about Dana Walters apparently getting the boot from NewsChannel 21, but then we saw her on the news last night! They had her standing out in the snow reporting on something or other...
So what happens when she's finally cut loose? Her bio says "Dana says she's at home in Central Oregon, and wouldn't live anywhere else!"
Maybe she'll go to the new Fox show opening up in January, hmmmmmmm?

I’d like to share with the folks of snarkybend my experience at Gusto Magazine’s 3 for $23 event. My friend and I were pretty excited that some local expensive restaurants in town were offering locals cheap date night – three courses for $23! We’d never been to the Blacksmith and were anxious to try. According to the menu posted last month a pork dish was on the menu for 3 for $23!!! So we made our reservations and went last month.
When we got there, we told the wait staff we were there to try the 3 for $23 deal. The waitress sighed and gave us the menu and sat us down. When we looked, the menu had changed from the day before. My friend and I were pretty miffed. We felt like we were bait and switched! Who goes to a steak place for shrimp chipino? Not us! I asked the waitress why the menu changed and she said that Gusto Magazine must have had the wrong menu. My friend and I ordered from the regular menu and spent $133 including tip. It had to have been the worst meal we’ve had in Bend also. My friend’s steak was tough and the wait staff didn’t warn him not to eat the jalapeño stuffed with cream cheese. It burnt his mouth so bad he couldn’t taste for the next day. My meatloaf, which is their signature dish, was rock hard and not moist at all. Isn’t that Gavin McMichael’s mother’s recipe?
So, a big thumbs down for Gusto Magazine’s 3 for $23 and Bend’s most overrated restaurant The Blacksmith. I *may* think of trying Ariana next time around because I heard they’re one of the best dining experiences in Bend. Hopefully, they don’t switch the menu on us.
We at Snarky Bend can't figure out why the Blacksmith is so popular, we also happen to think it's HIGHLY OVERRATED. Rated one of the best new restaurants in the world? Not hardly!! And what about this whole "Gusto" magazine? We've seen it, but weren't overly impressed... it just looks all the snobby restaurants in town got together to promote themselves and pat themselves on the back...

Not us! Everywhere I turn, I see another "Not another Wal-Mart" sign or bumper sticker. I don't know what to think about it. So here are the pros and cons and maybe all of you could help me out...
Pros to new north end Wal-Mart: * Shopping/grocery store for those folks living off Cooley Rd. Sure, they have Food 4 Less and Albertson's on 3rd Street but have you ever been in a Wal-Mart that has a grocery store? Pretty classy. Wish Target would expand to Super Target! * Jobs for citizens of our city --yes, I know, low paying but they will give us more jobs * They're into giving back to the people of Oregon
Cons to new north end Wal-Mart: * Traffic! Need I say more? * Low paying jobs with horrible benefits * Putting small mom and pops out of business
At lunch, I asked some folks how they felt about it. One gal, whose husband pulls in the big bucks, went on and on about how bad they treat their employees. I asked her if she's ever chatted to an employee who works there. Her response was "no," but she saw the money all about it. Another gal I work with was really upset that her co-worker was against it but didn't want to debate it with her co-worker pulling the "let's agree to disagree" card. So, after the first co-worker left, I asked the other co-worker "Why should they build a Wal-Mart?" Her response puzzled me "Sally (co-worker #1) owns a home and has never had it rough. Everyone that is against it has never had to struggle. It's the rich snobs that are against Wal-Mart. They've never struggled or witnessed the day to day struggles people at Wal-Mart had."
The thing I will say is that I will be opposed to Wal-Mart IF they close the south store but I can't see our county sustaining two Wal-Marts but maybe I'm wrong.
Anyway want to sway me off the fence? Be my guest!

The staff of Snark Bend were enjoying some brews at a local w bar when this guy walked up to the bar and sat next to us and ordered a microbrew. The bartender seemed to know him well and they were chatting it up a bit. It was hard to notice their conversation cuz they were chatting so loud but he was talking about "the station" and how "there are a whole bunch of new people to train." The staff of Snarky Bend decided to snoop and listen to their conversation. It came pretty apparent they were talking about KTVZ and all the folks that have left in the last few months. Here is who we noticed was gone: Nina, Hourie (she was so painful to look at but good and getting into the heart of the story), Alex (corny but would makes a good sports guy), Ben (was he a sportscasting prodigy -- he looks 12!), Libby (according to some blog she goes by Elizabeth now and works in Palm Springs), Jason (he's in Eugene now) and Melissa (we miss you!).
Anyway, the bartender asked the guy "what happened?" The guy went onto explain that after years of heavy turnover, KTVZ's owner decided to have the entry level, first time, out of college kids sign contracts when they start at KTVZ for three years. The folks you have been seeing over the years, well, their contracts are up and KTVZ doesn't renew them leaving them with many openings this summer.
Sounds harsh huh?
The bartender asked the guy how long he'd worked at the station and he said "too long." Now, I will say, this guy wasn't on-air because if it was someone like Lee Anderson or Bob Shaw, the staff at Snarky Bend would totally have to point that out. All we could figure out was that he works there having something to do with news.
I hope someday the people in Bend figure out that we're around and start sending us some dirt. I'd like something on Andy Andrews. That guy really bugggggs us.
