It’s Never too Late to Say, “Thank you!”
Thank you for giving from the heart in November and December to three locally based non-profit organizations that are near and dear to us at thump!
Many of you helped fill up the Operation Elf Box at the front of the shop to provide new toys for area kids in need.
Many of you purchased the Oregon Natural Desert Association’s 2012 landscape calendar at thump, and 100% of the proceeds went directly back to ONDA to help protect and preserve public lands East of the Cascades.
And many of you in December were taken by and purchased the amazing art and coffee mugs created by young Zambian orphans who live in the Vima Lupwa Home. 100% of the proceeds from your purchase will go directly to help offset the operational costs of running this non-denominational home, which serves some of Zambia’s neediest children. Most amazing is that this home was founded by Bend resident Malerie Pratt when she was only 19 years old!
To learn more about how these three local organizations make a difference locally and internationally, please go to: www.operationelfbox.com, www.onda.org and www.lupwahomes.org.

Find Your Wish on Flickr
The wooden planks swaying from thump’s ceiling capturing brief wishes from passersby, are as much of what makes thump, thump as any delicious drinks we serve. Have you ever wondered what happens to those wishes or how many have been created? Well, local artist and “Wishes” installation creator Mark Bernahl rotates the wishes every couple of months, adding new ones, removing old ones. He has kept every single wish that has been rotated out since the “Wishes” inception more than four years ago! And, he has scanned them! You can view more than 5,000 of them here. If you wrote a wish sometime in the last four years, go to our Flickr site and see if you can find it. Over 5,000 and counting are on the site! And . . . let us know if your wish came true!

Kent, Finley and I recently high tailed it to Portland for the evening to attend Stumptown’s “Meet the Producer” event, featuring El Salvadoran coffee producer, and Cup of Excellence winner, Aida Batlle. Stumptown’s senior green coffee buyer, Aleco Chigounis facilitated the conversation between Aida and the audience, shedding light on his own tremendous knowledge of coffee harvesting and processing and the role he plays in educating and encouraging coffee producers to improve coffee processing practices in the name of coffee quality.

A Central Oregon resident for the last 15 years, Chris Shunk specializes in wedding and portrait photography, but he enjoys shooting “anything and everything else. Anywhere I go the camera comes with me,” he says. Shunk coaches for Summit High School, which is how he became interested in photography. “I got my camera to take pictures of my athletes. Turns out I really loved doing it. Parents started asking me to do senior portraits and weddings.”
Tomorrow, MacKay & Sposito Inc. invites you to thump to share a free cup of coffee. Help us build our community by nominating a project for

Fri. 11/5 Open Late for 1st Friday Art Walk: Join us as we stay open late for the November Art Walk! We’re featuring the work of mixed media artist
Stumptown shares that, “The Torres family has been cultivating coffee in the West Valley for 60 years. They pioneered coffee production in the Barranca region of Naranjo. They also pioneered the cultivation of the Villalobos varietal, a mutation of the heirloom Typica varietal developed in the nearby town of Sarchi. After meticulous cherry selection our lot is mechanically demucilaged of its fruit and dried on patios. The Villalobos is produced in limited quantity on only eight hectares of land.”

From the Coffee Farms of El Salvador’s Aida Batlle, Cascara Coffee Cherry Tea is a fruity “infusion” similar to hibiscus, prepared by steeping dried, ripe coffee cherry fruit. Cascara is delicious served hot, or iced, and is caffeinated. These coffee cherries were dried at their peak ripeness on the small coffee farms owned and operated by renowned El Salvador coffee producer, Aida Batlle.
In March, we received an unusual request for a coffee donation from Mt. View High School student, Jessica Wolfe. Following in the footsteps of her brother, who did this last year, Jessica decided to raise money for a high school band trip to Japan, by running all night long! Jessica ran from 7:15pm until 7:04am the next morning, covering 63 miles! She had a support van and 15 peers to cheer her on, and thump coffee, of course, to keep them all awake! She raised over $800 out of $1,500 needed for next year’s trip with fellow Mt. View band members to Japan. Of the money raised, 10% will go to Haiti relief through Samaritans International.

Scenes from Central Oregon by local photographer Kristin Klus grace our walls this month. Klus’s works bridge the gap between classic darkroom photography and newer digital techniques in the artist’s self-described quest to create photographs “as powerful as nature itself.”

Scotty Carlile and Damian Schmitt, two local cyclists who from February – December race mountain bikes, road bikes and cyclocross, mostly in the Portland area, aspire to build a cohesive team to race nationally. They’ve been working as a team for the last several years to secure sponsorship to offset the costs of travel, entry fees and equipment for bike racing. Thump is happy to do our small part by fueling them with coffee for the early morning drives to and from The Valley for races.

In May, our primary baker, Janet Miick of The Bittersweet Kitchen, did what she does best: She entered her fudge cake with praline espresso buttercream filling, draped in ganache, and accessorized with tinted white chocolate tiles in the Tour Du Chocolat competition at the Tower Theatre – and walked away with “Best Use of Unique Ingredients.” Congrats Janet for being only 1 of 5 competitors to win an award! Check out

Just in! Our old friend Guatemala Finca El Injerto (bourbon varietal) has come home to us! This is the Guatemalan coffee and farm with whom Stumptown established its first Direct Trade relationship, a buying practice that has helped change how the coffee industry does business with coffee producers and has elevated Stumptown to the status of one of the most innovative and conscientious coffee roasters in the country.

You may have noticed the addition of a third espresso grinder on the bar. Our new Mazzer Robur E, affectionately named “Darth Vader,” is a state-of-the-art bad boy who means business! With the intent of adding another grinder for single-origin espresso, we went on the quest to research and discover a grinder that would also raise the bar in coffee excellence. Darth’s technology and design do just that.
A poem about our thumpistas who work so hard, are dedicated to the bean, and bring thump to life!

Inspired by her travels to northern India this past spring, local artist Nikki Hoke produced a series of prayer flag oil paintings, which are featured this month at Thump Coffee in downtown Bend.

Retired art educator and mosaic artist Donna Lutzky collaborated with Mimi Graves’ fifth-grade class at Bear Creek Creek Elementary to create the vibrant mosaics on display at thump this month. The mosaics incorporate bits of broken cups, bowls and plates from the coffeehouse, and they will be available for purchases to raise funds for the school’s otherwise un-funded art programs.
Wonder Twins activate! (A flashback phrase for those of you who watched cartoons in the ’70s.) Thump is most fortunate to have Elspeth, Sheena’s twin sister, join our crew. After returning to the States from 6+ months of traveling and visiting family with Sheena in Peru and South America, Elspeth decided to make Bend her home.

These are incredibly savvy farmers. Last year they won the Cup of Excellence with their bourbon varietal, and this year they won the Cup again but with their pacamara bean. Stumptown bought the entire lot, paying a record amount for a Guatemalan coffee.
This month’s Thumpista is Natalie, one of the rare people in this town who can say they were born and raised in Bend! After graduating from the University of Oregon with a B.A. in Family & Human Services, Natalie initially set her sights on moving to San Diego or Portland. But . . . an unexpected romance and a great job opportunity (at thump!) convinced her to return to her hometown.

September was a month of cool trainings. Kent broke away for a few days to go to the Seattle Coffeefest, an annual trade show where thousands of people gather to learn, teach, debate, buy, and sell everything related to coffee. A highlight of the trip was a cupping training for roasters. Kent tasted many samples of the same bean side by side, each roasted slightly differently, and he evaluated how minute adjustments to the roasting process either diminished or optimized the flavor of that particular coffee.
